Foggy Weekend Finds.
Saturday was one of those typical foggy summer days in San Francisco. As Mark Twain once remarked, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” So I headed north across the Golden Gate to Sausalito in seek of sunshine. Nope, no sun there either. What to do? Check out the Pinestreet Papery, one of my favorite stomping grounds across the bay. I’m a bit of a paper junkie, so put me in a stationery store and I’m bound for some sort of relapse. This weekend’s finds: A groovy Oh Boy! Notebook, some funky Angela Adams LuLu writing paper with mix & match envelopes, and finally some mod floral cocktail napkins from PPD (a good hostess should always have these on hand!).
Then back to the City…still fogged in. Time to get my craft on. Been meaning to whip up a little case for the digital camera anyhow. So I came up with this, using a bit of felt and trying out my junior high embroidery skills. Appears they are quite rusty, but perhaps make for a real homemade, folksy look. That’s my story, anyway, yeah, I meant to make it look all rough around the edges. I did!
Thankfully, the sun appeared on Sunday so you are saved from any further craftiness.
Sometimes San Francisco reminds me of…
…the little Italian villages of Cinque Terre. So many hills, so many colors and so many tiny homes nestled in the hills above the bay.
Apartment Therapy: everyone needs some now and then.
Have you checked out the San Francisco edition of Apartment Therapy?
“Changing the world, one apartment at a time.” – Apartment Therapy
It’s relatively new compared to it’s big sister-cities, NYC and Chicago, but it’s every bit as awesome and growing everyday. It has such a neighborhood feel to it and very much based in reality – real design problems and solutions. There’s tours of people’s apartments (which is so voyeuristic it’s a bit addicting!), culture, art, cooking and lots of fab new products are featured daily. People post their design problems and visitors to the site can comment and help them out with ideas and constructive criticism. It’s like having your own interior designer right there on the web, but you get many opinions, not just one. My friend Joni told me about it (thanks, Joni!) and ever since it’s been this sort of weird epiphany for me. Their site was an inspiration to me to start sfgirlbybay. I love to write and shoot pix and I really love my home and sharing it with good friends, so the idea of the blog was a perfect fit to combine all three of my passions into one really fun creative outlet. And, now, because of Apartment Therapy, so many good things have come my way and I’m feeling more creatively juiced than I have in a very long time. So thanks again AT for having me and being there – just like any good therapist!
If you didn’t happen to catch my apartment on House Tours on AT, you can link to the archive here.
Y’all sure this is the City?
Some more glimpses of life in and around San Francisco. If you live here, maybe I’ll remind you what a righteous place this is and how lucky we are. Should you not happen to not live here and would like to come for a visit someday, these will be the places you’d really want to see. Not Fisherman’s Wharf (Fisherman’s Wharf is what Times Square is to New York City – get it?). Today it’s the Fort Mason Community Garden. It sits smack in the middle of the City, well, actually on the north end of the City, smack on the edge of the bay. We come here a lot. It used to be an Army post and there are abandoned canons strewn about the grounds, hiding in secret spots. It is the gosh darn truth that not a single canon was ever fired. Not once. Nice, huh? Good for them. Fort Mason has reinvented itself into a community haven – a dog park, an educational center for art classes, pottery, photography, Italian and even contains the amazing vegetarian restaurant Green’s. Now, those are some good veggies. And then there’s this garden. There are currently about 150 residents on the wait list to join, and you can read more about its history here, but for now I’m just going to innundate you with the purty pix I took there today on my walk with Coop. This is one of the reasons I live here. Because something like this, sits in the middle of the big city, right down the hill from my place. If you look closely, you’ll see the City buildings looming in the background. And just how cool is that?
