Girly Girl.

Ever since my first trip to London I’ve had a thing for Cath Kidston. I bought myself the cutest handbag I own from Cath Kidston, a very dainty, oil cloth cabbage rose print little number, called ‘The Queen Mum’s Bag’. How great is that? Her designs may be considered a bit Shabby Chic, which has lost a bit of it’s shine in the spotlight these days with the onslaught of vintage modern. But here and there, perhaps in a kitchen or bath, but particularly in a bedroom, especially a little girl’s room, I think Cath Kidston prints have a fresh, clean look with a really cheerful feel. Every once in a while we all like to feel a little girly. Well, almost all of us (right, guys?).

Colts? Bears? Or Alameda!?

Sorry, but I’m just not a big fan of football. I think it’s the ubër tight uniforms, grunts and all that slapping each other on the bum. And it hurts me just to see these guys slamming each other onto cold, rock-hard AstroTurf. Seems just too weird to me and way too macho. Give me a civilized game of tennis or a Tour de France, any day. But that’s just me. So, if you happen to be of my ilk, and in the bay area here’s a reminder. It’s the 1st Sunday of the month, so that means the Alameda Flea Market is on this Sunday! Skip the Superbowl and the three-layer bean dip (who was the one that put that combination together, anyhow?) and hit the flea market. I’m hoping every one’s home on their couches and Lazyboys with a six-pack in their laps, so there’s lots of good bargains left to be had by the rest of ‘us’. Go team!

Time to Tivo Top Design.

I am so excited about Bravo’s Top Design that I called up and ordered cable. I haven’t watched TV in months (who has time?) but I felt that I would be just missing out on too much. Top Design begins this Wednesday night and I can’t wait. There will so much to talk about once we discover who the good guys are and then who’s just plain evil. There’s always one in the bunch. If we loved Project Runway, just think how obsessed we’ll be with a show that relates directly to our love of interior design. People, we’re doomed to addiction.

I’m already a huge fan of the charming Todd Oldham, our weekly host. And I’m quite fond of the panel of judges, too: I just finished producing a shoot with Kelly Wearstler for Condé Nast which turned out great; I’m not sure who doesn’t love Jonathan Adler; and I adore Elle Decor so I’m curious to hear more from Editor-in-Chief, Margaret Russell. It’s a pretty impressive line-up.

Check Bravo’s schedule in your neck of the woods and we should gather back here to chat about the show. Top Design is bound to be good TV. Let’s hope they ‘make it work’.

Simply Sublime.

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen Austin-based artist Jenny Hart’s amazing stitchery, but I’ve been a big fan for some time now. She creates amazing works of art with her embroidery needles, hoop and colorful threads. Take a look at these great portraits of , Roger Miller, a tough little cowgirl entitled Them’s Fighting Words, and Meg and Jack of The White Stripes. They’re brilliant. When I was high school embroidery was hot! You always had to embroider your denim shirts and low cut jeans, or like, you were just a nobody! I had one shirt that was completely threadbare, but I’d put so much work into it, I just couldn’t bear to part with it. My own little work of art. Not quite up to Jenny’s stitchery, but I loved it and wore it with silly school girl pride.

When Jenny’s not creating her artful stitchery, she’s making fun and unique embroidery patterns for us. Sublime Stitching has got a great assortment of patterns to choose from at only $3 each, including themes like Tattoos Your Towels, Sushi Bar and Scooter Babes. You can also order Starter Kits, blank ‘canvases’ such as tea towels, baby bibs, pillow cases, even banners. Everyone needs a banner! A fun way to create lovely art for your home.

There’s even a flickr group dedicated to Sublime Stitching projects from fellow embroidery enthusiasts. Lots of inspiration here. You can also check out Jenny’s Sublime Stitching Book and create your own embroidered works of art.

HGTV Comes to Visit.

It was big day at my apartment today. HGTV’s Small Space, Big Style came to visit! The folks at HGTV invited me to be featured on the show, which was quite exciting and surprising. I was thrilled! However, nobody told me how hard I’d have to work! I’m not one who even enjoys having my photograph taken, so to have to ad lib into a camera lens for about nine hours was pretty darn hard. But indeed fun, I must say. It’s just harder than you might think to act naturally with a giant lens staring you in the face, a microphone battery attached to your bum and a boom hanging over your head. Whew. Even when you’re up on the subject you’re speaking about, in this case my apartment, I found myself quite tongue-tied. I think I may have actually made up a few words somewhere along the line. I’m exhausted and so is Coop – he was my very talented co-star. Although they did let us relax in our trailer in between takes (er, uh, I guess that was the bedroom). I did wear uggs while resting – just like the real stars! I shot ‘b’ roll, walking & talking and a little (actually a lot) of faking doing things, like looking at the view, reading a magazine, blogging. Do you have any idea how hard it is to do nothing, naturally?

I’m not sure yet when my episode on Small Space Big Style airs, but a big thank you to Nicole for inviting me, Robin for calming my nerves, T-Bone for the battery on my bum and Gary for the giant lens and for not making too much fun of me and my goofy expressions. It was a blast!
