Art Stars.
Philly-based, gallery & boutique Art Star is always stocked with fresh, handmade crafts and home accessories. Located in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, they exhibit and sell handmade work of all types of media by emerging artists, designers, and crafters. Art Star aims to carry work that is really innovative and unique, while also creating and supporting a network of new artists. Exhibitions rotate every six weeks and their online boutique offers everything from original artwork, handmade clothes, jewelry and accessories to ceramics and prints.

From top to bottom, here’s a glimpse at their fun collection: Top left image by Camilla Engman, Cut Paper on Paper and signed by the lovely artist. I love this funky glazed and flocked Ceramic Wall Deer by Amy Santoferraro ; Sweet baroque-looking Shoes Print by Tory Franklin is hand screened on heavy stock paper and measures 8.75″ x 6″; Dumb Swing by Amy Karol is a quirky, handmade quilt in a maple frame.
And it’s never too late in the year for a Camilla Engman 2007 Calender. No matter what the month, each page is a frame-worthy work of art.
P is for Purple.
I was in a mood for something soothing tonight and the thought of pale purples came to mind, so I lit a few lavender candles. Maybe when you smell lavender or lilacs those calming colors begin to float through your mind, too. So I took a look around some of my favorite online design sites and found some inspirational photos to share and threw in a few photos of mine own. Here’s what I found, compliments of these lovely flickr pages, websites and blogs: Domino, Pink Loves Brown, Bluecockatoo, Desire to Inspire, The 10 Cent Designer, and Julies517.
Now, don’t you feel nice and calm?
David Who???
Do you know David Fussenegger? If not, please allow me to introduce you. David Fussenegger founded his company in the year 1832 and has remained an Austrian family textile business ever since. I’ve had a few of their super soft, flannel blankets for a while now, and am always on the lookout for more shops that carry the line. Their colors are vibrant and the patterns are always modern and fun. I’ve found their blankets, throws and pillow sleeves available online at Modernseed, SoftTurtle and occasionally even on eBay. I very often see his blankets in children’s shops (they make great and wonderfully unique baby gifts), but I’m actually quite surprised I don’t see David Fussenegger’s ‘adult’ line of blankets around more often. If you know where we can find more of David, please, do share.
May I Take Your Coat?

Erich Ginder Studio designs very beautiful things. I cannot afford many of these beautiful things, however, it would be shame to not have seen them. A shame not to share. Before focusing on a career in design, Erich studied at Chicago’s School of the Art Institute and, apparently, “played music in the park with friends while wearing robot costumes constructed of food packaging and taxidermy.” The heavy taxidermy influence can be spotted in his work.

Now based out of Seattle, Erich Ginder Studio creates beautiful, yet utilitarian housewares that attempt to blur the line between art and design. His work has been featured most recently in such magazines as Blueprint, Domino, I.D., and Wallpaper, among many others.
Man Meets Nature.
As an art buyer, I have the lucky job of looking at amazingly talented artists’ work everyday. Part of my job is reviewing new work by photographers from all over the world. I get sent a lot of promo cards with great photography, review portfolios and seek new work online whenever I have the time. I was checking out one of my favorite San Francisco reps, Heather Elder’s site at some of her talented pool of photographers’ work and I came upon Ann Elliott Cutting. She’s an L.A. based photographer and I just loved her vintage modern interiors and the strange juxtaposition of man meets wild kingdom. Just for fun and perhaps some inspiration, take a look.

Should you be looking for some great photographers, check out Heather Elder Represents and contact Heather or Lauranne – they’re a terrific resource.
