Mati of the Mission.

I just discovered the wonderful work of San Francisco-based artist Mati Rose. Mati shares a studio with about eight other artists in the Mission District of San Francisco, called Compound 21, where she’s constantly changing the inspiration she hangs all around her nook of the studio. The Mission is such a colorfully vibrant neighborhood, I wonder if this is where she might draw her inspiration for such fantastic color combinations?

I was first captured by Mati’s newest series of patchwork paintings, which are painted on the most beautiful thick handmade wooden panels, which were made by one her talented friends.

Mati’s flicker site also has an amazing array of her work. Even her Polaroids are cropped really well and have a really lovely quality of light to them. I love them!

Don’t forget to check out Mati’s great blog, and visit her etsy shop, Suspect (named for her little pink pirate cat, of course). And over on her website, please take moment to read her bio. You will crack up. Here’s an excerpt:

2 Truths and a Lie Bio:
1) Mati spent 4 months in a Colombian prison, teaching art.
2) Mati’s boyfriend is allergic to wheat and Mati loves all things wheat.
3) Mati’s parents are pirates.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: Obviously, the lie is answer #2.

Clamoring for a Club Chair?

Have you’ve been on the mad hunt for a cool club chair but can’t afford some of those pricier ones we’ve been seeing everywhere (yes, here too)? Urban Outfitters’ LuLu Chair (love the name) may be the good deal you’ve been seeking. It’s a fun, modern take on the classical club chair and I love the tapered legs, and the green leaf floral print is pretty cute too!

UO certainly has been doing a pretty great job these days keeping up with their big, sophisticated sister Anthropologie and keeping the prices on the down low.

Go West, Young Shoppers!

West Elm is having a pretty darn good sale. I may even have to spring for this lovely espresso daybed (um, it’s just $350). I love the bolsters and was thinking of covering them in a contrasting vintage fabric. I’ve been wanting (and searching) for the perfect daybed to put in the nook of my bay window. I had white in mind, of course, but this is an excellent price.

I really like these dining chairs. I think they’d look great around the 200-year-old dark wood farm table my mum is shipping up to me. I’ve decided to place white, modern chairs around the old table to give it a contrasting, clean look. I think these upholstered white danish modern looking ones might look cool.

This slat bench is a nice knock-off of the infamous George Nelson original. Not the legs so much, but I think it’s great looking and would look good in an entry way, stacked with art books, or maybe at the foot of a bed, to rest and display folded throws.

I quite like these sleek looking, smooth finished honey pine candle trays. I could see them doubling as some great serving platters for appetizers and the smaller square trays would make nice cocktail plates for guests.

Lastly, I love these sweet little acacia wood owl place card holders. A set of four is just $12. I’d want to make sure I had at least eight. If you had a dinner party for just four, it’d be kinda weird and too fancy to use place cards, no?

Yellow Rose of Texas.

One of my regular readers at sfgirlbybay shared some photos of the very groovy 70’s house she and her husband just redecorated. In the very popular these days, sunny yellow! Joslyn’s a former Northern California girl now living in Dallas, so I guess she was craving some of that California sunshine yellow. It’s also quite appropriate for the move to Texas. I love the original flagstone fireplace and geometric wood paneling. They’ve also done a fantastic job of picking up on the existing aesthetic of the house and giving it a fresh, modern take on its mid-century modern roots. I love the beautiful hardwood floors, and the alcove they painted yellow really makes a dramatic splash in the dining room. Even the blend of yellow and periwinkle blue in the baby’s room blends into the lovely color scheme. Take a look at Texas. Thanks, Joslyn!

Thrifty!

Last week I was happily blogging away over at the Design*Sponge Guest Blog and during my last week’s tenure there I blogged about some of my favorite thrift shops in The Mission District, as well as some of my favorite spots in general around the bay. While I’m playing catch-up here due to all my travels, you might like to check out some of my bargain hunting favs (and, let’s be truthful, some not-so-bargain spots too).

Grace is also going to be posting her own Design*Sponge City Guide of San Francisco, as well as Toronto – another favorite city of my (ahhh, Queen Street!) and also my parents’ hometown. That’s right, eh?
