My Sweet Cooper.
My sweet, wonderful dog Cooper passed away unexpectedly last night. He had a seizure and kept having them and they couldn’t stop them, and they couldn’t save him. He is the best thing that ever happened to me in my whole life – I rescued him and he rescued me. I love him so dearly and have never felt such loss. There’s just a big hole in me and I can’t believe he isn’t here. Just look at his beautiful, shining happy smile. He was very, very special and loved by many people. I’m going to need some time to process this, but will be back in a day or so. I’m going to need to have y’all to look forward to.
I love you, Coop. Always, always will.
Cooper was a fantastic guy. So loving and devoted to you. I will miss seeing him, and his barked greeting as I walk up the stairs. I know you will miss him terribly. So sorry for the loss of your beautiful companion.

victoria, i am so very sorry about cooper. i lost my 19 year old cat last spring, and it broke my heart even though at 19 it’s to be expected. i still think about her every day, and i’m sure i will for a long, long time. i hope that all the good times you shared together will help lessen your grief. he was a very lucky dog, and you’re so lucky to have had him in your life.

i had a dog die unexpectedly as well, and all i can say is i took comfort in knowing that unlike dogs that die longer drawn out deaths, every day of that dogs life was a happy, perfect day. he couldn’t have asked for a better life.

i’m so sorry for your loss. at the beginning of the summer my husband and i lost our rescue, rex, a 7 year old english bulldog very suddenly. he was truly a blessing and, while we gave him a great home and lots of love, he rescued us in return in so many ways. i truly empathize with you. take all the time you need to grieve.

Two weeks ago, I lost my Golden Retriever, Auggie, for the exact same reason. After reading your post, it was hard not to cry here at work. Losing Auggie broke my heart — and now there’s a piece that will always be missing. Nothing on earth is quite as precious as the love you get from a dog. No love from a human can come remotely close. I don’t know what it is to lose a dog friend – I have my pup now, and she’s my first real pup – but I think about the likelihood of my outliving her everyday and I am terrified of that day. I am not a particularly religious person, but I DO love the idea of Rainbow Bridge, and hope that I’ll be worthy of the place so I can see my Summer there after we’re all dead and gone. I wish you peace and strength and sanity until you see Coop again.

Coop was a kind, funny, happy dog and I was lucky to know him. He had a depth and an ‘old soul’ quality that made him very special. And he loved his Mom like crazy.

There is a book I recommended to Alicia (Posey Gets Cozy) when she lost Audrey, and I read it when I lost my boy, Oreo, on 6/28 this year. It’s called the Soul of Your Pet by Scott S. My deepfelt condolences. I’m nursing a very beloved animal thru his final days and everyday my heart feels like it weighs 1,000 pounds. I dread the day I wake up and he’s not there to greet me. But at least I have had a chance to say goodbye and spoil him as much as possible before he passes. I imagine Coop’s sudden passing makes his loss so much more difficult to bear. If you can find any solace, remember that you are so sad now, because the two of you had such a happy time together. Bless animals and those who love them.

it is always such a mutual rescue, isn’t it?
my mother believes that, when we die and on our soul’s way to heaven, we have to cross a bridge. and as we make our first step, every pet we’ve loved and lost comes forward to bring us across, rescuing us once again. i don’t know if i believe in heaven, but i believe that at least this happens.

I just stumbled upon your blog tonight and I am so sorry to hear about the unexpected loss of Cooper. We had the exact same thing happen with our Lady some years back. After Lady came Shelby who we lost to old age a year and a half ago. Now we have Sophie…a seven year old rescue dog. I always console myself with the knowledge that there’s always another homeless animal out there needing a loving home. We adopted Sophie in honor of Shelby and we adopted Shelby in honor of Lady. You’ll never forget Cooper, but you’ll know when the time is right. It sounds like you have a lot of love to give. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I too lost a sweet old boy earlier this year. I am so sorry for your loss. I know what it’s like to lose a four legged best friend. It still hurts when I think of him but I don’t think I ever want to stop hurting because I don’t want to forget him.
I love the story of how you and Cooper found each other. We like to say that we rescue animals but really it’s them that rescue us whether we realize it or not. As long as you think of him and remember him he’s never far from you.

I found him dead early the next morning. I was a wreck. I don’t think I have ever cried so many tears over an animal, as I did over that sweet, adorable, Hazel eyed, lizard. All I can offer in support is, “Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Hey, one of my close friends’ dog actually just passed away recently as well in the same manner. We took him to the hospital following the seizures and the whole family was there and the kids were crying to see him go. I was taking care of their dog for about a week while they went on vacation and couldn’t believe how close I got to the dog in just a few days. So I can’t imagine how you feel.

Just read your blog and tell you to hang in there. I lost my dog 4 days back, a beautiful golden brown lab that I have had for 11 years. It was very hard, his liver failed, I tried mt best but there was nothing that I could do and it hurt so bad. It still hurts, nothing that anybody says can make you feel better, but I just take it that his time with me is up and now he’s in a better place. It would have been harder if I had to see him suffer every day cause he had practically become a vegetable. So hang in there only time will heal your wounds. I run a tech blog, check it out.

May peace be with you. There is not much I can say to make you feel better except there are many people who care about you while you feel desperate and alone. Yes, your heart is heavy. Please do not deny yourself the time to grieve. We will be here waiting, believing in you. Allow time to heal your heart. I am so sorry. I cried when I read this on Designsponge and I cried here. I loved your mentions of Coop now and then. A dog is such a great partner as they always know when you need to be loved. My thoughts are with you.
A friend once told me, “Dogs are sinless creatures.” So true. They just have such beautiful souls, the kind that is rare among humans.

I have never commented before but I have been reading here awhile so I felt like I knew Cooper. Saying I am sorry doesn’t begin to come close as there aren’t words to express even the loss I feel just knowing him from afar. My dog of five years, Max (also rescued) passed away suddenly due to a tumor on his heart last year, and I remember feeling like someone ripped my heart out of my chest at first, but that suffocating pain I felt back then did ease and the warm memories are stronger than the hurt today, if that even makes sense. I am sorry to ramble on, I was just so blown away and I had to say thank you for letting me get to know Cooper.
I’ve been there and it hurts. When the time is right you’ll find another friend to save, and to be saved by.
Rescue dogs are the best, and Coop loved you more than you can ever imagine because of it.

Like others here, I’ve been enjoying your blog for a while and never commented, but reading about Cooper (who I always enjoyed seeing for his happy, griffy smile) forced me to. I’m so very sorry that he’s gone. He was obviously a well-loved, special dog. I know your heart is breaking, it happens to all of us who’ve known the boundless love of an animal, so take good care of yourself and take comfort that he knew you did the very best for him.

My heart just aches for you and I do know that pain. There is nothing like a four legged child that loves unconditionally. Cooper will be waiting for you when it’s your time to cross the bridge but for now he is in God’s Garden waiting and playing with the other beloved pets waiting for their master’s. Memories will heal the heart over time. ~ hugs ~
My heart goes out to you as you grieve the loss of your beloved companion pet. The complete unconditional love we receive from our dear pets is a difficult loss to navigate. The only way I could get over my grief was to get a new puppy to love. Not everyone is able to introduce a new pet quickly, but it did relieve the very real pain I was experiencing. I think your photograph of Cooper is ever so sweet. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry for your loss. I recently rescued a black lab, and just the thought of losing him is so painful, I cannot imaging what it must have felt like.
That’s so terrible. I often worry about losing my 10 year old Boston Terrier mix…so I cuddle up next to him on the couch and try to breathe in each moment to make sure that I always remember him. How he smells, how he feels, and how he looks at me. I know it’s hard, but thankfully you have many wonderful memories and photos to help you keep him near.
I am so sorry to hear about Cooper. It’s such sad news. I loved when he made it into your posts. My thoughts are with you during this tough time.

I love that you said, “I rescued him and he rescued me.” It’s amazing, this bond we have with our pets, isn’t it? May you find comfort knowing Cooper will always be with you. No matter what.
Ditto. Dogs rescue you from the everyday things that can bring you down. Stumbled upon your blog and hope you are holding up OK. My pup is only three and I can not even begin to contemplate losing her. In Maori, we would say “Kia Kaha” which means “Be strong”.

omgosh i am soo sorry i totally feel for you my dog was just taken away from me i never got to say goodbye i never knew what happened to him and i loved him soo much. but i hope you get through this well and i hope that you will be happy for him out of the pain he was in. :)

Oh Victoria, I am arriving a little late to say I am soooo sorry. I’ve just discovered your blog and couldn’t resist leaving another word of support.
I’ve recently lost my beloved dog Sharon, and I will certainly send a prayer for Sharon to watch over Cooper in Doggie’s Heaven (she’s a Rottie, will do a good job!!).
