My Sweet Cooper.

cooper
My sweet, wonderful dog Cooper passed away unexpectedly last night. He had a seizure and kept having them and they couldn’t stop them, and they couldn’t save him. He is the best thing that ever happened to me in my whole life – I rescued him and he rescued me. I love him so dearly and have never felt such loss. There’s just a big hole in me and I can’t believe he isn’t here. Just look at his beautiful, shining happy smile. He was very, very special and loved by many people. I’m going to need some time to process this, but will be back in a day or so. I’m going to need to have y’all to look forward to.
I love you, Coop. Always, always will.

  109. Heather says:

“Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….”

But by reading your comments, so many of your friends and colleagues offer their love and support during this hard time.

Nothing on earth is quite as precious as the love you get from a dog. No love from a human can come remotely close. I don’t know what it is to lose a dog friend – I have my pup now, and she’s my first real pup – but I think about the likelihood of my outliving her everyday and I am terrified of that day. I am not a particularly religious person, but I DO love the idea of Rainbow Bridge, and hope that I’ll be worthy of the place so I can see my Summer there after we’re all dead and gone. I wish you peace and strength and sanity until you see Coop again.

I read this post and gasped “no” out loud… I’m so sorry for your loss and wanted to add my condolences to the long list here. You share your life with strangers everyday, and should know that we strangers feel for you now.
Take as much time as you need – we’ll still be here when you get back.

    Oh Victoria,

I am so sorry for your loss. I know that you feel a huge hole deep in your heart. Maybe try to fill that hole up with the great memories you two had together. Coop will always be with you, you will carry him around in that hole. Again, I am so sorry.

  138. coral says:

    Victoria,
I am another frequent reader who has yet to comment,
It is obvious that the adventures you shared with Cooper have touched many.
I have also recently and suddenly lost a family dog, and understand how quiet an empty home can feel. I believe the best way to honor your relationship with Coop is to continue to relive the memories and share the stories of the times you have had together.
    Our thoughts are with you.

  139. Natasha says:

Just saw this at work and am beyond sad. Coop was such a part of who you were, you made a great team! We feel your loss, especially those of us who have recently been in your shoes. Another sustaining thought heading your way.

  143. Choni says:

Coop was a kind, funny, happy dog and I was lucky to know him. He had a depth and an ‘old soul’ quality that made him very special. And he loved his Mom like crazy.
It was so obvious that you and Coop were meant for each other. No one else could have cared for him and protected him and loved him the way you did. You gave him a wonderful life.
I’m so, so sorry. I will miss him deeply.

Looking at his photo I can see what a special guy he was. It is so rough to not have had any knowing ahead of time…the unexpected thing…
Certain animal companions do rescue us, huh? Open us wide, love us so–of course our hearts break into 1,000 tiny pieces when they are no longer where we can see them…but he is there.

  154. Alicia P. says:

Oh no. I’m so terribly sorry. It’s very hard. When it happened to ours this summer, it hurt me in my core. I think the best thing anyone said was “be gentle with yourself.” I wasn’t, really, or couldn’t be. But if you can be, it helps a little. Makes me cry just remembering. Stay close to people who understand. It will be okay again. Sweet Cooper. Peace to you both.

  155. Robin says:

I’m so sorry to read about Cooper and I’m sending you a big hug over the blogosphere. It is very hard to lose ‘someone’ so dear and close to you, but I think he will always be in your heart and soul, and you will be linked together forever. There is a book I recommended to Alicia (Posey Gets Cozy) when she lost Audrey, and I read it when I lost my boy, Oreo, on 6/28 this year. It’s called the Soul of Your Pet by Scott S. Smith and it gives you some peace that they definitely do go on, and we might even see them again one day. Take care of yourself. I wish you peace, love, and comfort. – Robin

But at least I have had a chance to say goodbye and spoil him as much as possible before he passes. I imagine Coop’s sudden passing makes his loss so much more difficult to bear. If you can find any solace, remember that you are so sad now, because the two of you had such a happy time together. Bless animals and those who love them.

I just stumbled upon your blog tonight and I am so sorry to hear about the unexpected loss of Cooper. We had the exact same thing happen with our Lady some years back. After Lady came Shelby who we lost to old age a year and a half ago. Now we have Sophie…a seven year old rescue dog. I always console myself with the knowledge that there’s always another homeless animal out there needing a loving home. We adopted Sophie in honor of Shelby and we adopted Shelby in honor of Lady. You’ll never forget Cooper, but you’ll know when the time is right. It sounds like you have a lot of love to give. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

It must have been difficult for you. You are not alone. I know exactly what it feels like to have a beloved pet pass away. Last month, my one year old Anole passed away during the night. I found him dead early the next morning. I was a wreck. I don’t think I have ever cried so many tears over an animal, as I did over that sweet, adorable, Hazel eyed, lizard. I had named him after the foreign teenager on ‘That 70′s show’. Anyway love, peace be with you during this difficult time. Victoria — I’m so, so sorry. While many of us know the depth of your loss, the memory of our own pain is still so different from the terrible first weeks of grief you face now. It’s a powerful love and must be followed, naturally, by a powerful sadness. I hope you are being comforted and held and taken care of a little . . .

Just read your blog and tell you to hang in there. I lost my dog 4 days back, a beautiful golden brown lab that I have had for 11 years. It was very hard, his liver failed, I tried mt best but there was nothing that I could do and it hurt so bad. It still hurts, nothing that anybody says can make you feel better, but I just take it that his time with me is up and now he’s in a better place. It would have been harder if I had to see him suffer every day cause he had practically become a vegetable. So hang in there only time will heal your wounds. I run a tech blog, check it out.

May peace be with you. There is not much I can say to make you feel better except there are many people who care about you while you feel desperate and alone. Yes, your heart is heavy. Please do not deny yourself the time to grieve. We will be here waiting, believing in you. Allow time to heal your heart. I lost a pet to seizures and it is the worst feeling in the world; you helpless in making them feel better and fixing what is hurting them. Hold onto those happy thoughts and memories that you gave Cooper the best life and love you could ever give. Look at old photos and use positive visualization to erase the nightmare images. We are here for you with much love and adoration.

I have never commented before but I have been reading here awhile so I felt like I knew Cooper. Saying I am sorry doesn’t begin to come close as there aren’t words to express even the loss I feel just knowing him from afar. My dog of five years, Max (also rescued) passed away suddenly due to a tumor on his heart last year, and I remember feeling like someone ripped my heart out of my chest at first, but that suffocating pain I felt back then did ease and the warm memories are stronger than the hurt today, if that even makes sense. I am sorry to ramble on, I was just so blown away and I had to say thank you for letting me get to know Cooper.

My heart goes out to you as you grieve the loss of your beloved companion pet. The complete unconditional love we receive from our dear pets is a difficult loss to navigate. Joan Baez sang “Old Blue” years ago. It’s haunting and consoling. I would recommend you listen to her sing it.

    Here are the lyrics:

Well, I had an old dog and his name was Blue,

Had an old dog and his name was Blue.

Had an old dog and his name was Blue…

Betcha five dollars he’s a good dog too…

    “Here old Blue”

    “Good dog you”

Well, I shouldered my axe and I tooted my horn,

Went to find ‘possum in the new-grown corn.

Old Blue treed and I went to see,

Blue had ‘possum up a tall oak tree.

Mmm, boy I roast’d ‘possum, nice and brown,

    Sweet po-ta-toes, n’ all a-round…

And to say “Here old Blue (here-boy)

    You can have some too”

Now, Old Blue died and he died so hard,

Shook the ground in my back-yard.

Dug his grave with a silver spade,

Lowered him down with a link of chain.

    Ev-er-y link I did call his name…

    Singing “Here…old…Blue-ue…

    “Good dog you”

Now, when I get to heaven, first thing I’ll do.

When I get to heaven, first thing ‘awm do.

When I get to heaven first thing I’ll do,

Pull out my horn and call old Blue…

I’ll say, “Here Old Blue come-on dog”

    “Good dog you.”

    I’ll say, “Here Blue-e”

    “I’m a coming there too”

    “You good dog you”
