Friday Food Files With Molly Watson: Superbowl Snacks.
I’m so excited to introduce a new Friday food feature on the blog, written by talented writer and gourmet cook, Molly Watson. You may have seen some of Molly’s delicious recipes in Sunset magazine or on Local Foods, or heard her radio program I’d Eat That, or perhaps read her blog The Dinner Files, The Good, The bad, The Embarrassing, a humorous look at what Molly ate for dinner. Sometimes she cooks it, sometimes she orders it, and sometimes it’s served to her. Molly will be writing a regular feature each Friday, providing us with fabulous recipes, as well as cooking and entertaining inspiration for the weekend, and beyond. For detailed recipes and cooking instructions, follow the links. Welcome Molly!
Word on the street is that that there is some big football game happening this weekend. I could lie and tell you I throw fabulous Superbowl parties and here’s how I do it, but I don’t. I don’t even attend Superbowl parties. There may be no sound I dislike more than that of football on television — I can hear that crazy hissing background noise of the crowd from 100 yards away. You may not, however, feel the same way. You may have invited friends over to watch the game, or be going somewhere to hang out and chat while the game is on and then dissect the new, ground-breaking commercials. You may be in need of some delicious Superbowl snacks. That is where I can help you.
If I were to throw a Superbowl party, I’d bust out with some homemade chips. You can make Homemade Potato Chips, which are fun, easy, and you can then season with crazy flavored or smoked salts. Even better in my book, however, are Beet Chips. They’re a bit sweet and, just as importantly for entertaining purposes, they are gorgeous.
The method is simple and pretty much the same for any root vegetable you’d like to turn into a chip (carrots, parsnips, rutabagas — go crazy!): peel, slice evenly and somewhat thinly, and cook in a bath of 325 -350 degree vegetable oil until golden and starting to brown, drain, sprinkle with salt or other seasoning, and cool (they crisp up as they cool). You can make them a few hours ahead but they really are best served the same day they are made.
Sound like too much work? Okay, I understand. For something even easier and, admittedly, way healthier, try my new go-to dip: Toasted Cumin Yogurt Dip. Make it extra pretty by sprinkling it with a few of the toasted cumin seeds and a drizzle of olive oil, if you’re so inclined. Serve with a platter of crudites: carrots, celery, fennel, and radishes are a combination I often use.
Go [fill in you team of choice]!

Flickr Curator: Yours Truly.

I don’t have a curated flickr set from anyone this week, and gosh knows I love flickering about myself, so I curated my own set of favorites. When I look at these images, I find a sense of peace, creative inspiration, and a reminder to keep my camera close at my side at all times. You never know what you might capture, from the random sublime, to an intimate moment, to a candid portrait, or perhaps a gentle still life. A goal of mine for 2009 is to improve my photography tenfold, so these images also guide and inspire me to try my very best to get there. Thanks to the many of you who thrill me, and ignite my photographic passion every day. I’ve barely touched the surface here, and there are just so many others I could share, and thank. If I have to have an addiction, I’m feeling pretty good about it being flickr.

Show Me How. Show Me Now.
The crafty duo Lauren Smith and Derek Fagerstrom from The Curiosity Shoppe sent more over a copy of their brand new book, Show Me How. Lauren and Derek have always had a passion for collecting and sharing obscure, eclectic and useful knowledge, and have regular monthly get-togethers with like-minded friends to teach each other how to do fun and cool, and curious things. So when they were approached by the Show Me Now team to help bring this fabulous book to fruition, they jumped right in.
With the Show Me How team, they’ve put together this incredible book, Show Me How, which shares with you everything from yoga poses, to how to build a loft bed, to making your own sushi or lamps. It’s anything, and everything in between, and I found it utterly fascinating and learned a great deal in just a few pages (but there are over 500 Things You Should Know). Take a look at some of these amazing topics, easily illustrated and explained to so you can learn and share, too!

Thanks once again, Lauren and Derek, and the Show Me Now team for your creative passion – it’s quite contagious! And, oh hey, want to join the Show Me team? They’re always seeking new members! Send them your ideas — be they practical tips, trendy tricks, outlandish stunts, or fascinating traditions from your culture — and show them how it’s done.
Say It Ain’t So…No Domino!!
I just heard the sad, sad news, that Domino Magazine is shutting it’s much beloved doors!! I will so miss this wonderful design magazine, and all the inspiration I discovered in Domino’s pages. Like so many other folks, the magazine has been hit hard by the recession, and employees were just told at a meeting that Condé Nast is closing the title. Thanks to all the amazing people who worked so hard to put out a great publication, and best wishes to you all. We’ll miss you Domino!
