Monthly Archives: February 2009

Oh, and happy, happy Friday.

Did you know the Lomography website calls the Diana camera the ‘ancient goddess of the moon’? I can see that! I hope you all get your cameras out this weekend and make some magic! Camera are magic, don’t you think?

In fact, I have an idea…how about I turn the tables on you guys, and let you share a little bit of your Sunday in the City. Send me a jpeg file (no more than 600 pixels wide) of photos around your town, and I’ll post a selection of your photos on the blog next week? Sound fun? Get snapping!

Friday Food Files With Molly Watson: Dolmas.

Weekends are a great time to take on cooking projects: Those dishes that take a bit more time, that involve a bit more planning, time to make things you usually buy. One such project I took on recently was dolmas, or stuffed grape leaves. My motivation was tri-fold: An accidentally opened jar of home-made (well, home-processed) grape leaves that needed to be used up was at the top of the list, but a close second was my love of good stuffed grape leaves. Coming in third was my intense disappointment every time I bite into a sadly ubiquitous soggy, mushy, bland version.

I made mine with brown rice, which added a lot of body, and threw in some pine nuts and sunflower seeds. Plenty of onion, black pepper, and mint rounded out the dolmas themselves. Serving them with fresh lemon wedges (sections of Meyer lemons from our backyard tree worked well for us) and fresh goat cheese turned them into an impressive and modern dish. Serve as a casual and light main course or as a rather elegant first course if you have a dinner party planned.

Monster Drawing Rally! Tonight!

Southern Exposure is bringing the 9th Annual Monster Drawing Rally, a live drawing and fundraising event featuring over 130 artists, to San Francisco’s Verdi Club tonight, February 27th. There’s also going to be music delivered all night long by Bo Derelict, drinks and curbside tacos sold by the very yummy El Tonayense.

Southern Exposure provides the basic necessities for the artists – pencils, charcoal, pens, markers, ink, and paper, while the artists create the content of the drawings. As the drawings are completed they will be hung on the walls and available for purchase for $60 each. The Monster Drawing Rally provides a fun and totally unique opportunity to watch a drawing come to life, and to purchase a work of art minutes after it’s completion. Proceeds from the event provide direct support for Southern Exposure’s Exhibitions and Artists in Education Programs.

Ode to My Deco: Mantel Mania.

In Numero Ocho of my Ode to My Domino’s My Deco, let’s get toasty! I recently purchased a vintage 1900’s Victorian fireplace mantel (yet to be installed in my bedroom…photos to come!) from Ohmega Salvage Yard in Berkeley. So, I’ve been hot on the hunt of just how to treat this faux fireplace. So, off I went to Domino’s My Deco Files in search of some inspiration, and found plenty! I love the idea of an architectural, white mantel perched dramatically against a dark, richly colored wall. And then again, you know me, I love lots of that Scandinavian white on white, and that’s probably the direction I’m headed. Among the Deco Files, I found lots of examples of both, and some other super stylish looks in between. Here’s a look.

Lovely Linen.

I came across these lovely linen pillows on etsy Shop One Eleven and well, I kinda swooned. These pillows are simple, and yet so elegant and chic. Perhaps something stylish Holly Golightly might wear. Like a classic little black dress and a single strand of pearls, I can see them making just about any room look utterly graceful and grand.
