time out with erin: a read a day.

When’s the last time you read a book? I mean, REALLY read a book? Like the whole thing? If you asked my husband, it would be in second grade [and he cheated and quit halfway]. I, however, finished a goodie last night and was inspired to share with you the joys of reading. I read a lot of things online, but there’s something wonderful about cuddling in bed after a warm shower and drifting to sleep after a few chapters in a real book. With real pages that you can dog-ear and highlight and take with you on road trips. I’m hopelessly addicted and find that I can’t fall asleep without something tangible to read.

I came across this lovely list of blogger’s current reads and wanted to see what you all were reading? I just finished ‘Like the Red Panda‘, which was totally dark, but very love-able. And last night, I devoured ‘Why Girls Are Weird‘, which is a nice light read that any blogger would love [the main character is a blogger, after all!]. What are you reading this Wednesday eve?
[ Time Out is brought to you each Wednesday with contagious enthusiasm from Erin Loechner, Editor @ Design for Mankind. Be good. ]

I just finished reading “Immoveable Feast: A Paris Christmas” and it was amazing. If you love food and paris and family and christmas, this is the book for you! And it’s a good read no matter what month it is ;)
…”Cake” was the book that saved our book club!
(We were getting way to full of ourselves.)
Short stories that are sarcastically sweet and need not to be kept in any particular order. It is easy and slightly dark.
I just finished The Time Travelers Wife (meh). I’m now excited to start Into Thin Air (a Mount Everest account).
I am a voracious reader and like you, love to snuggle in bed with a good book. Currently I have started re-reading the Harry Potter books. Such wonderous fun!!
P.S.
>It was One Hundred Years of Solitude that curbed our enthusiasm, even though a few of us has read it long ago.
> We all raced through the Twilight/Stephanie Meyers series, and some of us experiencing withdraw.
>This time we will be taking a diversion hopefully with Case Histories by Kate Atkinson.
…Stephen King said we… “would feel a combination of delight and amazement”. Se we’ll see.
Thank you for this list! I’ve been trying to eat up books this summer, because after all, what is better than sitting in the warm sun, with a slight breeze, reading a book with a glass of lemonade? =)
OH. Books are my one true love!
I read a novel a week and it is probably why I am an insomniac. I can’t put them down.
Have you heard of Goodreads? I find it a fantastic way to keep track of my novels. I have a widget on my blog that shows my faves and current reads. I would love to see your current reading!
I love your work.
Thanks for the beautiful inspirational images. *and the perfect teal colour to bring to the paint shop for matching for my kitchen reno!*
:) Andrea
Yes, thank you for the list! I just finished reading “I’m Down” a Memior by Mishna Wolff. When it came to talking about her difficult childhood, she had a great way of being lighthearted and at the same time very real without a bunch of self-pity. It was a hilarious, fun, and thought-provoking memior. I also just started into a book called “God of War” and another book titled “The Elegance of a Porcupine.”
i have such a hard time concentrating long enough to read a book these days, but i am enjoying ‘the pixar touch’. each time i see a new pixar movie, i want to learn more about the company and it’s very interesting. it took a long time to get where they are, today.
THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE….I cannot put it down. It is a beautiful book.
oh how funny, i just wrote a big post about my summer reads last week! great minds :) right now, i’m re-reading “the house of the spirits” for the millionth time…it’s such an amazing book. and next on the list is “the many lives and secret sorrows of josephine b”.
Thanks for the list. I’ve been reading Wabi Sabi for writers by Richard Powell and Tea Time For The Traditionally Built by Alexander McCall Smith. I think my next book will be Julie and Julia. I want to read the book before I see the movie.
It’s been almost two years since I first read it, but I still can’t stop talking about “A Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.” I had the privilege of seeing Junot Diaz, the author, speak recently and listening to him made me love the book even more. Highly, highly recommended.
Ohhh, I love reading! I just finished David Sedaris, Engulfed in Flames. Haha, he has such a great way with everyday situations! Actually he’s going to be at the Marin Center and I can’t wait to go see him! I love that you put a list up because I have been looking for a new good read!! Thank you! Even the covers make a beautiful photo!
hello, this one is a really interessting post. i am a book eater. i adore being in bed and read. or sit in the tube and read my way to work and back home. i recently read simon becketts ‘the chemistry of death’and i read now ‘written in bone’ and will read ‘whispers of the dead’ after finishing ‘written in bone’. all from the same author.and before that i read the millenium triology by stieg larsson. i love criminal stories, but i love also love stories, like ‘the timetravellers wife’ or ’slumdog millionaire’. i could write more, but i am curious about the others ;-)
Dog-earing pages in a book is one of my favorite things in life! I’m currently re-reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle because it is THAT good!
I find YA easier to read after a long, busy day, but just as good and satisfying as “adult” books. Here are some YA recommendations:
Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Before I Die by Jenny Downham
Long May She Reign by Ellen Emerson White
Jellico Road by Melina Marchetta
Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer
I am reading Motoring with Mohammed by Eric Hansen – a really funny and endearing travelogue about Yemen. I am really eager to read his other books as well. I just checked Under the Volcano by Malcolm Lowry out of the library, as well as The Angel’s Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I am eager to read them!
Oh, thank you for this list! I am a lover of lists and in need of a new book(s). “one hundred years of Solitude” looks mighty intriguing…I just finished Me Talk Pretty One Day by the talented David Sedaris so I’m in search of a new read.
I spent my spring reading all of Jane Austen. The last two books I read or I should say reread is Persuasion ,which is my favorite Jane Austen book and Jane Eyre. I’m currently rereading Juicy Pens, Thirsty Paper by Sark. I’m also going to start reading Wayne Dyer’s Excuses Begone
Wow, this is so great. I’m going camping this weekend and really want more reading material. There are great suggestions from readers. Oh, and I’ve read “Cake” and I love it. I even used it in a research paper about creative writing.
“The Story of Edgar Sawtelle” has been pretty good so far. I just read through an amazing scene and can’t stop thinking about it.
This list is great!
Oooh, goody! I’ve read about half of these, but the other half look great!
I just finished reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and then the sequel The Girl Who Played WIth Fire. THey are amazing murder mysteries and I can’t wait for the third and last of the series to come out in October! ANother favorite is One Hundred Secret Senses by Amy Tan.
One Hundred Years of Solitude is an amazing book. As is Love in the Time of Cholera. I just finished reading The Road. It is very dark and almost repetitive, but in a way the only builds the tension. I also recommend anything by Tom Robbins. Very irreverent and quotable work.
I have just finished Mao’s Last Dancer, a fantastic autobiography of Li Cunxin, a ballet dancer who grows up in Mao’s communist China. I’m not into ballet at all, but absolutely loved the book. Great portrait of one man, but also of a time and place we seem to to know much about in the West.
I finished reading “Trail of Crumbs” by Kim Sunee. She has mouthwatering recipes related to the story after every chapter. Her descriptions of Provence, Paris and love life made it a very good summer reading. I am now reading “My live in France” by Julia Child- if you like cooking, it’s wonderful. I am determined to finish the book before watching “Julie and Julia” movie.
I loved Cake too. So much. Too bad all the bad press it got on gawker made me wait two years to pick it up.
I’m currently recommending “Animal, Vegetable Miracle” to everyone I know. And I’ve become a recluse bookworm in the past week after I started “Admission” by Jean Hanff Korelitz. I wish I was home reading it right now!
Im more of a reader come winter time but there is nothing i love more than sunday mornings curled up in bed with the b/friend and our books, it heaven!
I just finished reading Rebecca Miller’s – The Private Lives of Pippa Lee as I wanted to have read the book before seeing the movie.
If anyone is looking for a good book to take on a trip I cant recommend Shataram by Gregorey David Roberts enough.
