green acres is the place for me.

if you’re old enough, or have seen the reruns, perhaps you remember that tv show green acres. she wanted the glamorous life in nyc, he wanted to live on the farm. can you have it both ways? oh, i think so! okay, i’m kinda gushing here. because i grew these tiny, tasty treasures on my balcony. in the middle of the city. i did. i swear. and i ate them, too. ha! but, seriously, i planted, in a pot, a perfectly nice tomato plant, fully expecting it to croak, and yet, no. it lived, and has borne fruit! i had four shiny, cherry red tomatoes on the small vine one day, and gobbled them up….and low and behold the very next day, another ‘crop’! and they were quite tasty, too.

can you call half a dozen cherry tomatoes, or a few strawberries a ‘crop’? probably not, no. but regardless, i think if you’ve got any decent outdoor space to grow fresh herbs, small vegetable plants, whatever you can then potentially eat (and, and of course even those you can’t) then you really ought to, because it feels really good. i can’t tell you what pleasure i gained from adding this tiny bounty of tomatoes to my salad. no, seriously, i did. i think whatever you might grow, no matter the size, it just tastes so much better than store bought. oh, just indulge me…grow something. check out this site, or this blog for some great tips on starting a container garden in your own tiny outdoor city space.

There is definitely some sort of connection when you grow your own food… no matter how small your space is. The fact is, you did it! The first photo is so pretty! Gardeners pride!
I miss my garden after turning my backyard into a concrete monster complete with large metal shop building all for the man in the house. I do still have some plants in containers and now seeing what you have done makes me interested in growing something that we can eat once again. Thanks for the inspiration and the lovely photos.
i love backyard gardening. i have some beef steak tomatoes that are looking pretty good so far. can’t wait to harvest them! :)
