article reports Flea Market is On.

globes

as of saturday, october 31st: important update: this article says the Alameda Flea Market is back on.

what the heck is going on? is it the end of the world? first, the bay bridge closes for more repairs (which i in no way make light of – it’s a commuters’ disaster), but now, what really hits me close to my heart is the possible closure of this month’s Alameda Flea Market.

i originally posted per a banner on the official Alameda Flea Market website that it would be closed, based on this statement they released saying “Proceedings have been commenced for the voluntary dissolution of Antiques By The Bay, Inc. As a result the show scheduled for Nov 1, 2009 will not take place.” Now, that banner has been removed from the site, and I hear rumors it’s all due to feuding partners. so, it sounds like it could be back on and you could take your chances. that’s the latest news i have (6:15pm). however, with the bay bridge still closed, personally, i’m finding another way to spend my sunday.

i do apologize for all the confusion, but their official website has had quite conflicting news. I don’t know what this means going forward, but it’s sad news for vendors (and vintage, antique shop sellers) who depend on their living from these shows, and buyers like a lot of us who adore it if it should shut down. I’ll keep you posted!

halloween

this week i thought i’d peruse my own flickr favorites with the Halloween holiday in mind. autumn certainly seems to be here, and the darkness is arriving earlier and earlier. here’s a few images I felt evoked that sense of changing seasons, colors and mood. you know that feeling — you leave work and you feel this sense of urgency to rush home, get your comfiest jammies on and get something warm cooking. settling in and keeping cozy on a chilly night. happy Halloween everybody!

friday food files with molly watson: homemade onion soup.

You’re such a patient, cheerful group over here at sfgirlbybay I’m betting that you’ll indulge me for just a moment. I want to tell you how to make soup.

You choose some ingredients. Saute some aromatics – like onions, garlic, ginger – in a bit of oil or butter, add broth or water or maybe some wine, add vegetables and/or starches – (adding longer cooking ones first), cook until everything is done, and then perhaps garnish with a little something fresh – herbs, a bit of cream, or cheese.

That really is all there is too it, but, if you want a bit more guidance, and this awesomely tasty and delightfully sweet cider onion soup with camembert toasts looks good, I beg you to please, check out the recipe and make it. Or, play with it and report back. Did you change the cheese? Add more veggies? Use red wine? Let us know just how adventurous you get!

100 words about design.

brecently i was asked by blogger blaine hogan to write 100 words about home design. i get kinda wordy sometimes, so it was harder than i expected to be concise, and explain some of my thoughts about how i get inspired about how i design my home, but it came to me that i don’t often explain to you why i feature not just images of pristinely decorated interiors, but art, and a lot of photography. so when blaine offered me an opportunity to share a bit of an explanation with you i was excited, because you may not always understand why i post about some of the things i do, and what the reason behind it might be.

Today, given this chance at 100 words I hope to try and explain the direction of the blog going forward. I still primarily feature lots and lots of interior design ideas, but i’ve tried to expand on that a little, hopefully attempting to make an impression on the right side (the creative side) of your brain, to help you see things just a little differently. I truly believe that looking at artwork in its many forms can inspire you in ways you never thought possible, or can bring about an idea you may not ever have thought of before.

so here goes — 100 words:  “I blog about inspirational, affordable interior design ideas that encourage your own individuality and unique personal style. Looking at artwork can inspire you in ways you never thought possible. So I feature photography a lot these days as a way to bring about a new way of looking at things, making an impression that might trigger ideas about how you might want to change your home decor. Photography can do that for you, and so I feature talented photographers and their work in the hopes that they may unravel a tiny new thread of an idea for you, something you may now see in a whole new light. I don’t often explain the method behind my blog madness, so this seemed like a good opportunity to explain. I hope it makes you think a little differently the next time you see a beautiful piece of artwork or photography.”
