oh, and happy, happy friday.

so, it’s black friday and cyber monday or some such thing. i don’t really do gift guides, because, honestly i feel gifts should be heartfelt and special and have everything to do with the person you are giving the gift to, and not so much what i tell you to shop for. so i think that you are perfectly capable of finding just the right thing all on your own. so, i’m not going to even try to tell you what that might be, because i don’t personally know your loved ones like you do.
i would recommend shopping at small, indie shops, like any one of my advertisers you see on the right hand column of the blog. lots of them are artists, photographers, or handmade, like something you might also find on the poppytalk handmade website where the best of etsy is represented. or from an independent mom & pop shop like rare device, perch, the curiosity shop or park life – all wonderful small boutiques in san francisco, but also shoppable online, to make shopping a little less stressful.
or, go on — make something yourself. that i feel good about. but, whatever you choose, think of your recipients long and hard, and what might be most meaningful to them. it could be a scarf you knit, or a photograph, or just something special that shows how you love them. love goes a long way. try to stay calm out there, and try and remember what it’s really all about. in the words of the beloved beatles, love is all you need.

What a great perspective! I completely share it. I always try to put a lot of thought into the gifts I give — I want the person to really use it and love it because I love them. And I give a lot of baked goods that I make myself at holiday time — there’s nothing like a friend knowing that you cared about her enough to spend a whole day making almond croissants because those are her favorite.
this post almost makes me cry. you are so heartfelt and i couldn’t agree more with everything you have said. shopping handmade, independent and/or local is the most responsible thing we can do these days. as well as from the heart. thanks for this post!
yes, yes, and yes!!!
This perspective is one I share very passionately. People compliment me on my gift-giving but it’s really easy to pay attention to the clues my loved ones give out all year long. Pay attention to the music they’re listening to, the links they are sending you in email, what they’re talking about lately, what do they order at restaurants, etc. It simply takes time and attention to give thoughtfully. And it’s so much fun!
Good one, love is indeed all i need. This form of gift is so priceless and the best in the whole wide world.
lovely. what a great reminder, to be mindful of the gifts we give and why we give them, at a time of year that can be so material + commercial. thank you :)
thanks. i needed that. i love the confidence you have in everyone! and i love this site!!!
I am completely against mall-shopping for holiday gifts, so I love your post!!! All of the gifts I’m giving this year are handmade by me or an artist I love, or they are vintage. That’s what I love to receive as well. Thanks for a perfect post.
xoxo Gigi
nice!
You are writting my thoughts. Loved that post!!!!
I love this post, thank you for sharing your sentiments! I’m going to be spending a lot of time this weekend making gifts for the people I love.
Cool.
True.
Peace.
:)
Hi! Love the post! so true and so well written! May I be a little cheeky and leave you this link to a fab new Etsy shop I just came across? http://www.etsy.com/shop/LittleCanaryBird The owner/artist has some lovely stuff on there, lovingly hand crafted. Thanks!
thanks for your thoughts – so true!
i think i’ll try to make things this year. starting with the “thinking hard about my loved ones”-part of course! :)
i can’t figure out how to leave a trackback url, so i’ll post it here:
