oh, and happy, happy friday.

i love this virtual tour down san francisco’s market street in 1905, and the music from air makes it. not much has changed — it’s still bustling! except apparently, at one point  you could you could still make a left turn, and, nobody was peeing on you. okay, maybe it’s a little bit different.

  1. wow…so captivating! i love this type of thing. it makes me wonder what i would be if i were alive then instead of now. take away my computer and i’m a painter. or maybe i wouldn’t have been an artist at all…

Oh my gosh- this is SO SO SO cool! Thanks for posting!

  3. One of my professors from college – back in the 80s – they found this film buried in an attic (or something like that). We have the honor of watching it in class before it was shipped off to a museum (or something like that). It was a long time ago, don’t remember the specifics. :)

  6. Victoria, this is the coolest video I’ve ever seen, music and all. My husband and I just sat and watched the whole thing in awe. Yes, what a difference it is today. Thanks so much for sharing this treasure! Lynn

i’ve never had the pleasure of visiting san francisco, and still, i found this video so fascinating! it’s incredible to see footage of everyday life from 105 years ago. it makes me wonder what kind of lives did each of these people featured lead. thanks for sharing!

Oh I love this, Victoria! This is what the city looks and sounds like to me today… I love that this city is as small as it is. Some days I just head out and start walking and I’ll walk for an hour or two with my headphones plugged into some fancy music and the city just seems so peaceful at those moments with my own soundtrack. Like the chaos is just a hum, and everyone seems a little happier than they might actually be. I love it…

I grew up in the Bay Area and find this so wonderful! My Grandfather was in the 1906 earthquake. My Mom grew up in SF. Lots of history in my family. I moved away years ago but return as often as I can. It’s in my blood. Thank you SO much for sharing that great piece of history.

  23. Incredible. Air. Fave band. SF. Fave city. Unbelievable combination. Thank you so much Victoria!

It blows my mind that this was a moment in time that actually happened. Those people are no longer on this earth, but we see them going about their day as if they’ll have a million more. Such a weird and fascinating perspective some 105 years later.

Love the hooligans around 4.57 min hanging onto the back of a car. Reminds me that my Mom (who was born in 1932) and her siblings used to put on tin roller skates and hitch rides on passing cars, much to the drivers’ chagrin!

  25. Julie says:

This gives me CHILLS! Thanks for posting. I love my city.

  26. victoria says:

thanks julie! me too! i loved this!
