i’m so excited for this sfgirlbybay giveaway! camilla engman’s suitcase series, published by uppercase is one of my favorite book purchases in a long time. and today, i’m happy to be giving a copy of camilla’s the suitcase series away on the blog.
The Suitcase Series shares the lives of artists and designers from around the world. Small and intimate, each book contains secret treasures, like this booklet (above) of the adventures of Morran, Camilla’s sweet little Swedish dog with a big imagination. Each book in The Suitcase Series is a precious souvenir of a creative journey shared between the artist and you, the reader.

I always feel so inspired by a new environment, so one of the things I always take in my suitcase when travelling is enough items to make a little craft project, some scraps of pretty paper, paste and scissors, or needles, thread and fabric.

whenever i travel, i always take a little sewing kit, because the one time I didn’t… there was a bit of an incident and I really really wished I had my kit with me… :)
I always take space, so I can stuff it with cheap junk shop finds and tourist tat from my travels heh heh!
Wow, I’ve never heard of this series, will have to check it out. I always bring my small sketchpad and a pencil with me when I travel. Sneak it out and sketch people and their suitcases, ready to travel. I just got these Inktense pencils by Durwent, which are watercolor pencils that become permanent after a few days, can’t wait to try them out.

I always have a good pair of comfy walking shoes, and if I’m wearing them while I’m getting to my destination: my camera (but it would be there even if I didn’t wear my comfy shoes)
I always have a travel journal, some compfy pants or skirts that can handle being wrinkled, and I have a bracelet that I wear for safe travels. It has gone with me to Ireland, Scotland, England, Spain and Egypt so far. All fabulous trips! I am so lucky!

Oh my Gosh ! I love Camilla’s work ! I already have a few prints of hers and I cannot tire of them ! These books look like pure eye and spirit candy !
As for what I always take along in my suitcase , well : TOO MUCH of everything and one mascara, is what I take along ! ha ha ha !
i have admired camilla’s work for so long and watching glimpses of work via her studio is always a treat! My overnight bag always includes my camera and lenses and a good book.

I love, love, love Camilla’s work! What a great giveaway. My favorite kind of trip is a laid-back beach vacation so my ideal suitcase is light and easy: flip-flops, tank tops and sunglasses, plus a sketchbook and reading material.

The books are adorable! And they fit right in with my suitcase essentials: journal, pen, camera and a book or two (or three…) to read. To match the adorable drawings, I also need my dear stuffed toys (and sometimes photography models) Velvie (an ancient bunny) and Conrad (a little tiny bear.) :)
Forget clothes, so long as I have the above things. :P
I read your blog almost every day, and when i miss some and have to play catch up, its like christmas!
in my suitcase…i always have a small quilted bag that my grandmother gave me to put small treasures i find in. Mostly its things on the street or in the woods, lost and found, and then i give them a new life and make them into jewelry. last thing i found were some tiny bones.

i try to travel light so i can travel easier and have room for gifts and souvenirs, but i always bring photos of my family (they are in my heart and mind, but i always like to see their faces), a small Bible, a camera, notebook and markers, simple clothes (flip flops, t-shirts and skirts), a toothbrush and toothpaste, a swimsuit and lots of joy and gratitude for being able to see ‘old’ favorites and new places.

You can always find a good pair of walking shoes in my suitcase. My favorite way to explore a new place is on foot, and I need to be comfortable while doing so! My sneakers may not be the greatest fashion statement, but they ensure I can walk all day without worrying about blisters or broken heels.

I always bring with me my owl luggage tag when I travel. It makes it easy to pick out my suitcase on the baggage belt and it looks cool!

When I travel, I always refresh my playlists and definitely pack my camera.
Ooo I love her work. I’m a no-frills traveler. My suitcase holds boring necessities like clothes, shoes, and phone/camera chargers. But my carry-on usually contains my camera and at least one trashy gossip mag, my guilty travel pleasure.
Kawaiiiii (which means sweet cute in Japanese)! What do I always pack? Hmmm…I’m good, I underpack essentials but only because I overpack cameras and film. Which I hand carry and get hand checked through security…they love me. My babies are great big, metal-ly beasts but I can’t not take a few!

oh! what a lovely book! i always travel light so i can fill my backpack with little treasures found on my journey. i love to unpack my bag when i get home and find shells carefully stuffed with toilet paper and coconut shell earrings bought from a street vendor…far more rewarding than looking chic when traveling:)

this is a very lovely giveaway. something i always take with me in my suitcase…well that would be my camera! i can never go on a trip without it.
it might sound strange, but i usually put a fabric softener sheet in with my clothes in my bags. i never want to pull clothes out and have them smell musty or like airplane cargo or something. (oh no – do i sound ocd? because i’m not. promise.) it’s just nice to know that they will smell fresh when i open up my bags!

when i was younger i always brought a big scarf along to lay, pin up or tie somewhere to cheer up and personalize my always lo-budget accommodations. these days my most precious take alongs are an accordion fold album from the conran shop in red and blue of pictures of my cats (it seems to cheer up the hotel maids, i’ve had nice comments from them about my beautiful cats) and i also bring my pashmina because i am often cold, and once it saved my life in a freezing b&b. finally, once i took a gouache set and wooden box to paint on my plastic tray in economy class. my flight attendant was very intrigued and said he’d NEVER seen anyone do that before!
I always pack my best underwear when I go on trips and leave my granny pants at home :)

Mint gel shoe insoles from South Korea and black nail polish. My feet always suffer during travel, so the insoles help during the day, and the nail polish is part of a little DIY pedi pick-me-up during the night.

I am gearing up for a 2 month, one-way road trip from New England to Alaska and I couldn’t go without a big ol’ pair of sunglasses, my tulle skirt and my vintage fur stole! Maybe not the most practical items but they add a lil’ bit-o-glam to my travels!

Oh wow I fell in love with some wall paper with these illustrations on, but I didn’t know who the artist was. I have been packing so often recently I’ve got my suitcase items down to a tee. Ironically I can’t really think of anything right now, but everything is always rolled. You can get so much more in that way!

Besides essentials like a toothbrush and underwear, I always take this red cloth charm that was given to me a number of years ago. I had just moved to Scotland, and on my very first day, I met a girl from China who also was experiencing her first day. We exchanged something from on each other’s bags, and even though I never saw her again and can’t remember her name, I always keep it with me in my travels.
I always take along a my camera, an extra battery, a couple extra memory cards, a book and a journal.

Besides, he squishes into my suitcase nicely, doesn’t cost me a fortune in eats when I’m traveling (unlike some of my companions) and he never argues with me over what local attractions to visit. I say he’s the perfect travel buddy. *nods*

Elmo and Tchorny (an elmo toy and a cat toy) always come with me. They’ve been all over the world and I forgot to take them on my last trip and I felt really, really sad.
Otherwise I always take my mini-computer with me. It makes flights so much shorter.
In terms of real things to take into my suitcase… hum, I guess clean underwear. I’m really low maintenance so I don’t usually carry that much stuff.

oh, and I always make sure to pack SNACKIES in my suitcase (like granola bars, fruit snacks, graham crackers… you never know when your gonna need a little something something).
In my suitcase, I always carry something from the trip I made before–something small, like a subway ticket or a stone I collected. No flora or fauna, though! At the end of each trip, I simply leave an item in my suitcase. When I’m packing, I find it, and it’s like a surprise.
For some strange reason, I always end up carrying too many pairs of socks. Sometimes its ridiculous :)

I carry waterproof matches. I don’t know why. Just in case I get stranded at the airport and it’s cold and the sprinklers turn on and I need to build a fire? Oddly, you would guess I bought them for camping, but I’ve never been. I guess I’m simply overly prepared for any situation.

This book looks amazing! Next month, I’m heading to Mexico. I always pack light, and I always pack my camera for recording what I can’t draw in my journal. In my journal, I write, paste receipts/bits of magazines, and draw what I can’t take photos of (i.e. items in some museums). I also take my collection of good luck charms (Turkish glass that protects from the evil eye, New Zealand green stone necklace that was a gift, angel coin, Australian 50 cent coin, and new on this trip will be a Safe Travels coin a friend gave me recently). Finally, I always have a little black dress made of a material that can be balled up, but when shaken out is wrinkle-free. ;-)

I have a collection of different suitcases and each carries something special. When I DJ I have a suitcase just for my vinyl records (with a few CDs thrown in).
When I travel, I try to pack light, but I always end up finding/buying/getting gifted with such wonderful things that I must find a new suitcase in which to lug it all home in. Needless to say, I have quite a collection now!

There is always some pairs of clean underwear, and 2 pairs of denim jeans and various tops. Something I do take to travel is my camera but having it stored in my suitcase many worthy photos can go amiss.

I always take my camera, a sketchbook, and a Pigma pen. Also several bandanas to either use as a napkin if I’m picnicing or to keep my hair in control if I’m having a bad hair day!

i always carry my journal with me. it is my constant companion.
Because my training keeps me away from my girlfriend, the only time I fly (lately) is to see her. So, I always bring something to surprise her. Generally, I order her favorite chocolates and then I hand deliver them.
A note from a loved one. Its the best travel companion.
Sketchbook and camera … always! I also like to leave space in my suitcase to bring back whatever wonders I might find on my travels :)

whenever i travel, i always make sure to bring a camera, a journal (with my favorite pen of course) and a good book or two. can’t leave without those things!
Super boring, but I always carry my iPod with me. Sometimes it’s nice to be distracted in an airport or be able to tune out the screaming baby in the next aisle.

This is a beautiful book! On my travels, I always bring along an eye mask and a pair of earplugs to help me sleep no matter what the time of day or amount of ruckus going on around me (especially useful in hostels)!

what a fun giveaway! let’s see… i always pack my polaroid sx-70 and as much film as i can find. the photos i take while traveling are always my favorites.
wonderful! when traveling, my camera is a must. i’m always sure to bring an oversized scarf for pairing with any outfit- and when the plane gets chilly! i try to fit in my tennis shoes (for that run) too… but that doesn’t always work out.
I always take magazines!! Design, fashion, cooking….they keep my creative juices flowing…

Camilla’s work is always so inspiring.
When I travel I take a linen wrap that works as a light blanket on the plane and a flimsy towel on the beach. I was given it as a gift and privately thought it was totally useless (not a pashmina, sniff sniff)…now ten years later it has become indispensable and those silly cashmere wraps are sitting on a shelf waiting to be turned into baby quilts and throw pillows.

my parents always taught me to be sure to take your bathing suit in your CARRY ON- that way, if your luggage gets lost you can still go swimming and enjoy your vacation!

I travel frequently out of the country so I always take my passport! I also take my latest journal with me so I can scribble notes. and finally I always bring some form of a camera- sometimes thats my DSLR, sometimes my holga, sometimes my film minolta.
I always carry a journal, so I can write down the name of all the places I visit. I also take my camera and a good book!
Love the book. In my suitcase, I take as little as possible. That is my rule!

I always have a small pouch for postcards and envelopes so that I can send a tiny hello and stories about a place that I visit to my friends. I love writing postcards and I love Camilla’s works.

My suitcase always has spare specs! I would be blind (or at least missing out on all the sights) without my glasses. I have only needed to use the spares once but they are definitely worth taking along.

To be honest, I decide which clothes I can fit once all my cameras are packed into my suitcase. I always bring my nikon & sx-70, along with some precious film. there’s always a moleskine thrown in there somewhere, with a purple, felt tip pen. and, if I can manage it, some girl scout thin mint cookies!
I always pack an extra book or two. And if I’m going on a personal trip, I pack an extra duffel bag for my purchases!

In my suitcase will always be fun, impractical shoes for going out at night (girls prerogative to look cute right?!) and my camera!
I always take a string bag with long handles,they’re small enough to put in your pocket, you can put an inordinate amount of stuff in them and with the long handles you can fashion a backpack so that all your treasures don’t weigh you down.
funny thing…her books remind me of THE thing i bring along with me on my travels–whether it gets tossed in my suitcase, carry-on or zipper pocket of my shoulder bag: my “Plate 5, ‘Poppy’” notepad (whose back pages are all graphing paper). within it’s pages are notes about places i’ve been and things i’ve seen–along with those i haven’t–new phrases i’ve heard on the street, ticket stubs, sketches, song lyrics, books on my “to read” list–any must-remember item of inspiration that falls upon my lap, falls upon its pages.

When travelling, I always bring a little piece of home to remind me of where I come from and that I’m lucky to now discover a new corner of the world – someone else’s home. I’m from Vancouver and I have a little piece of shell picked up from a visit to the beach. It’s polished pink and smoothed down by its own ocean travels. It sits in a little pocket of my handbag. Just a little reminder of the West.
Sunglasses are a must, as well as paints, a sketchbook, a scarf, and a camera. Which camera is the problem…

I always take my grandfathers vintage red leather passport holder, moleskin notebooks, good books, and tons of scarves- the perfect accessory.
I always used to take a little Where’s Waldo doll with me so I could take pictures with it wherever I happened to be… But, ironically, I couldn’t find him before my last trip to Mexico and haven’t been able to locate him since. Le sad.

when i travel i always bring a cute little notebook to document my days, that and about 6 different pairs of shoes.

Hm…I’m trying to think what i ALWAYS take in my suitcase…well, i usually take a sadly stuffed bag of toiletries: face wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, makeup, jewelry, contact solution, extra contacts, perhaps extra “occasion” makeup, etc. etc. etc.
But the most IMPORTANT things to me i never put in my suitcase! So, the “real” answer would be things i always take in some sort of “carry-on” purse: my dear teddy bear and a book. :)
I love to travel light so whatever I take will have gone through much vetting. The winners normally include a couple of good books or magazines, my camera, ipod, travel chargers, Time Out travel guides, floss, flashlight, pocket book, journal and my eyeglasses – very important!
