stealing style: pearl river.

hand-painted mesh lanterns (from $19.50).
ever been to pearl river? if you’ve never visited their new york soho store, you can always shop online, and always find a few great bargains.
i thought i’d start a new weekly post, ‘stealing style’ featuring items for the budget-but-style-conscious in all of us. this week, a look at pearl river – a virtual treasure trove of really cheap, and yet great finds for around the house. from bamboo blinds, to paper lanterns and culinary kitchenware, pearl river’s prices are hard to beat.

screaming orange sake set ($32.50), fun fishbowl paper lantern ($9.50), enamel dishes ($1.50), and camp stools ($19.50) that come in a variety of colors and print patterns.

vintage chinese tripod stool ($85.00), barrel-shaped paper noguchi-like table lamp ($24.50), bamboo bird cage ($49.50) and a very happy good morning white towel ($1.95).

pretty, funky flower towels ($2.25), longevity soup spoons (.65¢) striped terrycloth towels ($1.75) and classic longevity teacups ($1.25).

a varity of Guang Sang Tea (from $2.25) in pretty, collectible tins. i’d keep these around when the tea’s all gone, for storing buttons and knick-knacks — the price is great for the tin alone!

Girl…I LOVE pearl river mart. I’ve been to the SOHO store a couple of times and I always come back home with a basket full of goodies for like $35. I love their Mango tea and they have THE best selection of candies…I can’t believe you didn’t post their candies. Yeah, so Pearl River Mart is awesome :-)
i use to LOVE going there when I lived in nyc… thanks for posting this and refreshing my mind AND the ability to shop online there.
How great are those tins?! And the fact they ship abroad!
i love those lanterns! they’d turn any room into a stage!
This new feature is dangerous to my wallet!
Ooo love these items! There’s a similar boutique in Boston’s South End that is fabulous!
last summer i managed to spend a happy afternoon in pearl river, soho. having bought a few towels online a couple of years back i knew when in NY i needed to tread the ‘well trod’ path to their shopfront. i am coveting the hanging lanterns but alas must wait for my secondhand year to be up… i’m thinking i need to pop them on my birthday list :)
OMG!! Love this site! I think it’s better than our Chinatown. I wish I had known about it last year when I was scrambling around for paper lanterns. These are the cutest ones. Thanks Victoria!!
I LOVE pearl river! and I live in France… hooray for on-line shopping!

Hey Lindsey Lou…just looked at the candles…none are scented are they?
One of the things I loved about living in NY was Pearl River. LOVE that store!
OMGosh…thank you for posting this. I bought some of their tea tins online a year+ ago & have not for the life of me been able to remember the name of the site to go back & buy more! Thanks to you, now I can (and I will bookmark it this time)–YAY!!!
Love this idea! Can’t wait to see your future “stealing style” posts.
This is a great idea… I look forward to it. My favorite comparable shops here in SF are all on Clement street. Though I can’t usually find those awesome tea tins anywhere but in China Town. Where are some of your favorite Asian import shops here in the city, Victoria?
Ahh! Great finds! I love the birdcage :)
By the way, I’m hosting a lovely little giveaway on my blog that you might be interested in entering! Here’s the link:

i’m glad y’all like this new feature! i do love a good bargain!
jesse lu – i like New May Wah Market, and many others on clement i never seem to know the name of. i also love soko hardware in japantown!
I have been to Pearl River Mart more times than I can count, and it is an amazing place! I’m glad you can shop online, but if you ever have the chance you should definitely go to the bricks and mortar store at least once. It is so easy to lose track of time while wandering the aisles on each floor. I’ve got so many little inexpensive Pearl River Mart goodies all over my apartment, and they really brighten things up.
my dad has several of those bird cages, they are really pretty. he’s had them for along time, i’m pretty sure he brought them over from china.
and the tea tins are really cute! i’ve been to pearl river mart and it really is an amazing store. i’m sure you can look at various shops in chinatown and in the richmond for similar things.
the tins are fabulous!! i am very into color right now (the effects of spring maybe?) and so the are suiting my mood perfectly! thanks for sharing this gem of a place!

I forgot how much I love Pearl River. I discovered it when I was in New York two years ago and it brought me back to some of the things from my childhood.
This was my favourite.
When I was going to school in NYC, I used to live two blocks away from Pearl River. I bought SO much there. It’s still one of my favorite stores.
Thanks for the kind words everyone!
