fab friday.

anthropologie.

okay, so i have this weird fascination with bees. those little critters are genius! i heard this great story on npr’s science friday (yes, i’m a geek!) and now i can’t stop thinking about bees. they have all kinds of fascinating behavior, including sending ‘scouts’ out to find the new hives and report back to the bee community by flapping their wings in excitement. and, beekeeping has become all the rage, so with that in mind, i thought i’d share some queen-bee-worthy inspiration! so here’s the birds and bees version of fab friday, sans the birds (we’ll leave that to portlandia!).

the beehive hairdo never goes out of style, via the cherry blossom girl.

the beekeeper, by the black apple.

a great read, hive mind on the bold italic; made to order honeycomb dress from emily ryan; a pair of osborne & little fabric pillow shames from modern thread.

beautiful busy as a bee necklace from the apple tree; hable construction pillow from twig; honeycomb shelves from Quinze and Milan; and ferm living’s wallpaper squares remind me of hives.

rockaway taco’s urban beekeeping in queens, via the selby; and a bee hotel (who knew!?) from wudwerx.

I love this post! (I JUST placed an order for my bey/honeycomb invitations.) I love the colors of honey and the geometric patterns of the combs. Thanks for sharing!

  4. This is a great post. My home state is Utah (the beehive state) and I have always had a weird love for bees. Thanks for sharing all these great ideas.

I love bees too. Wasps and I don’t get along well but I’d invite a bee to tea any day. I really like the bee hotel. I’ll have to check it out. I’ll be planting some fruit trees and wondered about bee keeping. You’ve reignited my interest. Happy Weekend!

  7. i read somewhere that bees have no business flying because of their size/weight vs wing span…but the bees pay no mind and fly anyways.

My best friend is an entomologist and has raised bees. I’ve been there for the honey extraction and you can’t imagine how heavy it is. We would be totally lost without bees and all the lovely work those gals do for us.

i’m glad you all find bees as interesting as i do…i wasn’t sure my fascination would appeal to you! and thanks for the links.

one day, i’d really love to start beekeeping!

There’s a great documentary called the queen of the sun playing tonight at the roxy sponsored by slow food on how bees are disapearing.

There’s a great documentary called the queen of the sun playing tonight at the roxy sponsored by slow food on how bees are disapearing. Should be really good. Apparently, bees are in the air (bad pun i know).

The Busy as a Bee necklace is super cute. I have a random obsession with giraffes, so no worries. We all have something random that makes us smile.

    Happy Friday,

Victoria, if you haven’t seen the NOVA documentary “Tales From the Hive” you must must must. It is absolutely fascinating; I’m a bee fan but my jaw dropped over and over as I watched.

Take this recommendation from Leah Giberson’s cousin!!! (Sorry Leah, for name-dropping!)

  20. victoria says:

thanks again for the bee love links! can’t wait to check these out.

    and thanks leah’s cousin! ;)

Thank you for such a lovely post, and as you can tell by my username, we have a thing for bees too! (Just a hobby, one hive–anybody can and should do it!)

  22. Kate says:

Save the Bees!! … did you know that eating local honey can help with seasonal allergies? since those local bees take pollen from local flowers and trees that make you sneeze, eating their honey is like a natural localized antibiotic! I love bees!

  23. Nike says:

We built a bee hotel when I was in school. If you have a garden, you should make one, too. It could be realized in every size and style you can think of and will save the small, not dangerous (no honey either) wild bees from disapearing!!!

  24. one of my favorite patterns!
