guest post: sweet fine day | whimsy & spice.
Hello sfgirlbybay readers, this is Jenna from Sweet Fine Day and Whimsy & Spice. I’m so happy to be here today guest blogging while Victoria is traveling (lucky girl!). I love her Sunday in the City series and since I won’t be going on my own summer holiday until the middle of August, I thought I would put together a list of my favorite things to do during the summer here in NYC.

The Dumbo waterfront in Brooklyn is one of my favorite spots in NY. My girls love to skip rocks in the East River or just lounge on the grass and watch the boats sail by (and no, don’t worry. They don’t swim in the water…there is a sprinkler in the awesome playground nearby).

Each season, Central Park brings something spectacular and summer is no exception. I don’t come to the park too often (we have a smaller version of the same park near where we live in Brooklyn), but every time I come here I am blown away by how beautiful it is.

But Bryant Park might very well be my favorite park in the city. It’s just 1 city block long, but it’s lush and intimate with a children’s carousel, an outdoor reading library, a big lawn and free wifi. Plus you almost feel like you’re in Europe sitting in one of those cafe chairs.

Summer is the best for fresh picked fruit and vegetables from the farmer’s market, isn’t it?

In fact, this strawberry pie, one of the most popular recipes we’ve posted on our blog is made from fresh strawberries that we picked last year. We hope to make it again this summer.

One of our favorite summer pastimes is spending late afternoons on the stoop and having drinks with our neighbors. The kids play in sprinklers on our double-wide sidewalks while the adults share wine and beers and talk. Most days we’re out there till the sun goes down.

Summer isn’t summer without popsicles. We like to sample frozen treats from some of the city’s artisan popsicle makers…

… or make our own at home, sometimes from leftover drinks that we sell along with our cookies at the Brooklyn Flea.

We love a good fireworks show and NYC puts on a great one! Now that the girls are older we look forward to seeing more 4th of July fireworks with them.
Here are a few picks of things I love for summer:

1. Ok, so this necklace is really expensive, but I’m so intrigued by it! The chain is hand crocheted in sterling silver. Arielle de Pinto Spectrum Wave Necklace; 2. Indispensable for fresh squeezed lemonade, Apothecary Beverage Jar; 3. A beautiful, striped cotton blanket, Mexchic; 4. These sandals look so comfortable! Tito Sandal; 5. Striped paper straws dress up any summer drink, Pebble in my Pocket.

Ah, this post makes me miss New York so much.

I’ll be right over!! I miss NYC summers, growing up we were backward going from the country to the city! But it was the main time to visit the grandparents while we were out of school – NYC is summer & holidays to me.
Bryant Park & rosé on the steps sounds 100% perfect right now.
I knew I’d love this post before I even clicked on it! Jenna always manages to show me New York in a way that actually looks like the city that I know and love.
I’ve never been to NYC but this makes me want to go! Looks so fun!

I really love this post! I can close my eyes and put myself into the places you are recommending just from the descriptions alone. The photos are the cherry on top.
i am really craving a trip to nyc now!
Wonderful selection of NYC summertime treats! In Bryant Park they now also have ping pong tables, a petanque court, and tai chi some mornings and yoga at some lunch times. Also the Monday summer movie series! Do I sound like a Bryant Park spokesperson? I just like the place and pass by it every day on my way to and from work ;)
