inspired by: bill cunningham new york.

last night i went to one of my favorite old theatres in the city, the castro, to see Bill Cunningham New York.  i was told before i went that i would be grinning from ear to ear throughout the entire film, and they did not lie. a few tears slipped in as well, as i was just so completely moved by bill cunningham, the person. the film is a documentary of the life of bill and his career as a photographer. the original sartorialist. i just had to share. have you seen it? did you just love it?

Living life simply — to the point of eccentricity — and using a bicycle to get around, 80-year-old photographer Bill Cunningham documents what people are wearing on the streets of new york and in the salons of the wealthy. Through his columns in the Sunday New York Times, “Evening Hours” and “On the Street” bill uniquely chronicles the city’s fashion trends while maintaining an almost childlike sense of joy in the process. his is a moral code we could all learn from. and whether you’re a fan of photography or not, i think it’s almost impossible and highly improbable that you won’t fall in love with this film. it’s in limited release, but soon to come to netflix.

“We all get dressed for Bill,” says Vogue editrix Anna Wintour.

Oh Victoria… I’m surprised it took you so long. Went opening night and got to chat with the directors. So fun and what an amazing individual! Any and all creative individuals should see this film. Although I am jealous that you got to see it at the Castro. I saw it at the Embarcadero theaters and I’m really starting to loathe them especially w/ the new Kabuki theaters. The screens are sooo small there.

kelly – i know! i wanted to see it when i was in nyc, and then there just wasn’t enough time. when i heard it was at the castro for just one night, i knew i had to go!

    ADORE HIM.

Martha Stewart whined on her blog that he’s only featured her once. She has no style! That’s why.

Yes, the smiles and tears…what a lovely human being BC is. I saw the movie a few months ago in SF (Embarcadero) where the film makers were in attendance and had a Q&A after the film. It was a treat, very insightful…I could see it again.

Cunningham is an institution in the NYC fashion world. I recently saw him pedaling down a midtown street in his trademark blue dustcoat, a sight which made me smile inside. A few years back I passed him on a street corner near Barney’s and couldn’t help but say to him “I’m a big fan of your work”, for which I got a very small nod.

  23. oh kay says:

just saw it tonight – and to see how someone lived simply ALL his life – a bicycle, no bathroom or kitchen. And here I am bemoaning my wonderful life (!) He seems like such a true gentleman artist…loved it and so glad the documentarians took the time to honor his life and work.

  24. victoria says:

so glad you were inspired kay – i felt the same way!
