good reads: food rules.

probably my favorite illustrator ever, Maira Kalman, has teamed up with author and food guru Michael Pollan to illustrate his updated, classic book, Food Rules: an eater’s manual. it’s a beautiful book and i love the concept — when you eat real food you don’t need rules. maira kalman’s illustrations seem perfectly suited to the subject matter, straightforward and simple guidelines for eating. food rules teaches us that eating doesn’t have to be so complicated, and food should be more about communion with our friends and loved with as much as it is about nutrition and health. set your table with flowers and everything will taste twice as good; if you’re not hungry enough to eat an apple, you’re probably not hungry. i think these kinds of food rules make simple and perfect sense — now to just live by it!

What a pairing, Maira and Michael. I assumed I’d learned all I could from owning all of Michael’s books but when I saw the collaboration wiht Maira, I couldn’t resist. I just read she’s working on a giant embroidery of everything she’s learned in Rome. That will be impressive!

“set your table with flowers and everything will taste twice as good” I need to do this more often.

I see one of the illustrations is of “A desk is not a table.” I have to say, the illustration is much more dramatic than the rule itself.

Thanks for being on the tour!
