in my dreams, i live here: new york city.

i saw this illustration of rob hodgson’s of the catcher in the rye book jacket, and it made me think of new york city. and what it might be like to live in nyc. i’ve never done that, and i’ve always wanted to, at least for just a little while. haven’t you? i mean it’s an experience they say everyone should have, and who knows, maybe you try on the city and it suits you, so you stay. anyway, i started to think what my new york apartment might look like, and i think this may be close. in my head, anyway. a girl can dream.

i’ll naturally have a fire escape and maybe it’s a little bit gritty, so i’ll hang some lovely globe lights out there to give it a bit of cheer. no doubt, i’ll have all kinds of books stacked up below the window sill too, like these hillary walker photographed.

i assume the place will not be on the large side, so i’m gonna need these loft-like curtains to give the illusion of separate spaces. i’ve always liked loved elizabeth roberts loft, and these curtains are perfection. i like how the roll back, like hospital curtains from the ceiling.

and since i’m fantasizing here, there will be a small living room, but with a real wood burning fireplace and mantle and it will be elegant, but cozy for entertaining on new york winter nights.

i’ll probably accessorize with a little souvenir homage to new york, like this one from the pages of domino; and i’d love a huge painting by harold hollingsworth (via design milk); and maybe i’ll get all fancy and new york sophisticate with some fashion books and a glass clouche bell jar, via the glitter guide.

there will be more books scattered about everywhere, stacked on chairs like this shot from hilary walker, and frames leaning against the walls. i like that look.

the kitchen may be small too, but hopefully well organized, via design*sponge; and perhaps have a little eating nook like this one via french by design.

yes*! I love NYC.. & did fulfill my fantasy of living there. I made my living as an artist and had a storefront gallery/studio. Truly Amazing city, so happy I took that leap, once you live in NYC, Y♡U can do anything*! go for it.

    So lovely… always… :)

  7. Your dream NYC apartment looks a lot like my real NYC apartment… fire escape with twinkle lights (shhh.. illegal!), lots of books to read by the wood burning fireplace, big windows with an incredible view, black white & pink all over, even the chunk of amethyst and leaning artwork. Of course my reality is teeny tiny, but that is the price I happily pay (and crazy rent of course) to live in my favorite neighborhood, the West Village. Let me know if you ever want to trade for a day, or month ; )

  8. sweeeet!

Yes! Ditto! I’ve always wanted to live in NYC, not forever but maybe a little while. I’m a bit obsessed with small space design and NY has some of the greatest. One of my best friends has an art studio in Queens and I’d love to experience the city with her. I don’t even pay for my own local paper but you bet your a** I pay for the NY Times (which used to be free but I digress).

I’m really digging the dark wood floors in the curtain pic above (the kitty ain’t bad either) and I love the Catcher in the Rye illustration.

Funny how your dream NYC apartment looks like my dream NYC apartment! I once did a NYC trip and it was everything I’d hoped it would be. From the carriage ride in Central Park to breakfast at The Plaza, it was magical. That was 25 years ago, and I’ve never gone back. But I would really love to.

How is it that we can miss NYC and dream of living there, while speaking for myself have spend less than a total of 10 days there..

Well, it looks like your dream may come true. (for a month) I’m happy for you!

I would also be open for a trade, if i can find a good shelter for my husband!

  14. I have always wanted to live in New York, always. I really must do it at some point!

LOVE this post and this idea of living in NYC. Yes, I’ve had that fantasy too. All that Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Gershwin, Woody Allen good stuff. I can’t help hearing Rhapsody in Blue in my head when I’m there – it has everything, such a great city.

Also – thank you for exposing us to the illustrator Rob Hodgson. I’m a fan now…

  22. Evelyn says:

I know that living room with the fireplace! It was featured in Apartment Therapy. It’s my friend Amanda’s house in San Francisco – gorgeous!

  23. Carol says:

    Love it!
I’m so glad to see a Californian actually appreciates the east coast. I’m tired of my friends here (south of SF) asking me why I’m flying home to Massachusetts for visits in the winter and fall. Like any place cooler than 50 degrees is hell.
NYC is great for its friendly people and sense of irony.

  24. I may have to leave up my glob lights so I can enjoy them all year long! :)

  25. marni says:

your description describes my dream place perfectly!

  26. JoAnna says:

I’m particularly fond of this mash-up of photos. I’ve always wondered what it would be like in a small, confined space where you have to be super creative about every inch or in a huge, open loft-like apartment. This particular post made me feel cozy. I think I’d like this space a lot.

  27. Elizabeth says:

Wow, your tiny, organized dream kitchen looks exactly like my tiny, (sometimes) organized kitchen — it is my kitchen. Quelle surprise & a beautiful collection of images.
