bottle made with ocean plastic.

this post in partnership with method.

if you know anything about me, you know i wake up almost every single saturday and sunday and head straight for the beach. the ocean is my calming place and it always has been, i grew up going there every weekend of my life, and now i head there with lucy for a hike to start the day off right. but, it’s estimated that several million tons of plastic makes its way into our oceans every year, polluting the environment and hurting our marine populations as more plastic washes up on beaches everyday. so this may be the coolest and most environmental packaging ever — because Method’s new 2-in-1 Dish + Hand Soap is packaged in the world’s first bottle made of recovered ocean plastic. plastic collected from our beaches by hand by method employees. i kid you not — you can watch the video.

with their innovative use of recovered ocean plastic, method hopes to show how design can be used to tackle environmental problems. they’re not saying that the solution to the ocean plastic problem is making bottles out of trash, but by doing so method proves that there are alternatives to using virgin materials – like PCR plastic, which method uses in all their bottles. by recycling + reusing existing plastic, method takes an important step toward improving the state of our oceans. the method Ocean Plastic hand & dish soap comes in Sweet Water and Sea Minerals fragrances and is available exclusively at Whole Foods Markets — you can take the Ocean Plastic pledge on Facebook for a chance to win a $100 gift card to Whole Foods. Contest ends November 30.

This reminds me of the artist couple, Richard Lang and Judith Selby, I read about in the Bay Area making beautiful art projects from their findings on the beaches. Thought you might like this article about them:

  2. Okay, this is so cool. Thanks for telling me this! I didn’t know that about Method soap, and will actually go out of my way to buy it now (Sorry, my beloved Mrs. Meyer’s basil soap.).
