a bit of berlin.

i’m excited to have a new guest blogger joining the sfgirlbybay team, and while she’s gearing up for her first post, anna of the blog european chic is allowing me to share a recent post of hers of this amazing flat in berlin.
anna lives in paris, france and has traveled extensively through europe, so she is going to be sharing more great spaces from european cities here on sfgirlbybay once a month, so look forward to those! in the meantime, here’s a peek at this home that belongs to friends of hers, Ines Colmorgen + André Wyst. Ines is a former stylist with a children clothing shop in Berlin called ‘Petite Boutique‘ (with a website due to launch in december).

unexpected guests: tamar schechner.

i haven’t been ‘visiting’ as much as i’d like to be lately, but this week we’re back with unexpected guest Tamar Schechner, of the lovely blog, Nest Pretty Things. Tamar is an Accessory and jewelry designer with a charming, eclectic home in a small vermont village called Shelburne. a wonderful collection of vintage linens and wallpaper gives Tamar’s home a bit of a bohemian, Bazaar style mixed with English cottage coziness. i think you’re going to like it. and, if you like tamar’s style, you should visit her blog, and also drop in her shop here, and on etsy for some of her handmade goodness!

What is your idea of a perfect day in shelburne?
A perfect day with be a cool and crisp Autumn day when the trees have all turned and the views from everywhere are simply breathtaking, My favorite would be spending a Saturday with my husband and usually one of the boys would join us (we have 3 teen sons) we stop at the Shelburne farmer market for some late season veggies, then have some delicious espresso and home made scones at our local cafe, we continue to our local flea market to see what’s new, from there to the Shelburne apple orchard for some apple picking, it’s a family tradition and we do this a few times during the season.
Another perfect day would be to go into Burlington which is ten minutes away — it’s a perfect New England college town right by lake Champlain, we love having breakfast at Mirabelle’s, walking up and down Church street, going down to the waterfront park or catching a movie at the Roxy.

What are some of your favorite local shops?
For home furnishing I love a new little shop right here in Shelburne — Chez Boheme. I could buy everything, including the gorgeous art work on the walls painted by the owner Jennifer Blanchard. For clothing I adore Sweet Lady Jane in Burlington, a beautiful and tasteful mix of clothing and accessories. We also have many many second hand shops in our area which I frequent a lot, and the Charlotte Weekend Flea Market during the warm months.

What’s your favorite bargain find or product?
Last summer I found a gorgeous quilt from the 40′s for $20!!! And, I’ve also found some great linens there over the last few years.

Wall to wall carpets, brown “country” kitchens, little frilly window dressings, lazyboy couches.

Who are some of your favorite artists?
My mother and sister, both artists. My mom passed away 12 years ago, her art fills our home, she was a diverse painter with an incredible sense of color and composition and I love being surrounded by her work. My sister is also a beautiful and talented painter, her big passion is gardens, you can see her work here.

My favorite thing is the beautiful Suzani on our couch, it was a gift from my aunt Susan Meller who is a textile collector and author.

unexpected guests: lisa solomon.

oh indeed, this is one great unexpected guest, if i do say so myself! i’ve been in love with bay area artist lisa solomon’s work since i discovered her back in 2007, so it’s an honor to share lisa’s beautiful home, and refreshing and inspiring outlook on life with you today. Lisa is wonderfully tactile artist, and you can find many of her pieces available at the beholder, and view more of her lovely work on her website.

so, today we’re heading just across the bay bridge to visit lisa’s eclectic and vintage-inspired home in North Oakland, just on the boarder of Berkeley and Emeryville, which is just 20 minutes from San Francisco. Lisa likes to think of Oakland as the Brooklyn to SF’s Manhattan, and I would have to agree. let’s go!

What is your idea of a perfect day in oakland?
There are a couple of possibilities. There’s always going to museums [both here in the East Bay or in SF], there’s parks — Tilden Park and Lake Temescal are a couple of favs. There’s good eating — so many cute cafes and up and coming restaurants. Plus farmer’s markets. And there’s good shopping too! These last few weeks it’s been lovely just walking around and seeing all the spring blooms.

What’s your favorite feature in your home?
I love the mantle over our fake coal burning stove. That was a GREAT find from porch light antiques before she moved to portland. I also love the archways between our living room/dining room/office. The rooms aren’t very big, but the archways make them feel bigger than they are.

What don’t you leave home without?
These days diapers and crackers :). But in general — My iphone — especially since it doubles as a camera.

What are a few of your favorite local shops?
Tale of the Yak, Berkeley Bowl, and I just discovered Pretty Penny vintage clothing.

What’s on your wish list?
Japanese Sugar cake molds; A stash messenger bag, and the entire set of petite pattern books [I have two].

What’s your favorite bargain find or product?
I don’t have one particular favorite. I’m all about the hunt – finding the perfect thing at the perfect price; trolling flea markets, thrift stores, etc. is fun for me. If I can find something for a great deal? That only makes it better!!

What is your biggest interior design nightmare?
Clutter. How to hide it, prevent it, organize it.

Who are some of your favorite artists?
This is SUCH a hard question for me. I have so many favorites and art crushes. People I’ve admired FOREVER [eva hesse, agnes martin] and people who I discover and get added to the favorites list [lauren dicioccio, victoria may]. I try to document them on my blog under the label artists. You can take a gander to see who I’m looking at and inspired by.

Where do you find inspiration?
where do I NOT find inspiration. Seriously. I will often trip over my own feet because I’m looking up at some piece of string hanging from a tree thinking it’s beautiful. I think our lives are filled with so many small inspiration moments. You just have to allow yourself to see/smell/taste/feel them.

Do you collect anything?
Too many things. Glass beakers, vintage fans, bento boxes, sewing machines, vintage office accouterments. If it’s old and colorful and or useful or well designed I probably want it.

Who would you like to sit down to drinks with?
Audrey Hepburn.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?
Lately I’ve been allowing myself apple croissants and morning buns from La Farine about once a week.

What is your most treasured belonging?
This is a hard one too. I have a lot of things I treasure. Art from friends and people I admire. Things that are from my grandmother’s home. I have an antique locket that holds the photos of all the pets and loved ones I’ve lost — that’s a pretty special item.

What souvenir did you bring back from your last trip?
My last big trip was to Japan, so I brought back a LOT of good stuff. But one of my favorite things is this little buddha with a red cap from nihon-jibuddha daibutsu, the biggest buddha in japan. People buy them and leave them as offerings there. There are thousands of them piled around. Mine sits in my office.

What are some of your favorites websites and blogs?
Besides yours? :) soooo many. How bout I list five places that always inspire me: poppytalk, habit [full disclosure : I'm a guest on habit this month -- but I've loved this blog since it's inception], of paper and things, dear ada, and the clutter.
unexpected guests: martha mcquade.

oh, we’re having a lovely visit on unexpected guests today! were heading to Minneapolis, Minnesota to the beautiful home of designer Martha McQuade of UNIFORM natural. martha and her family live just south of the downtown area in a 1950′s rambler. i love martha’s beautiful and ethically made line of clothing and accessories. i first discovered her photographs on flickr and then martha’s design work, and now her wonderfully mid-century modern home. it’s simple, sleek and oh-so-stylish.

martha’s UNIFORM natural line was just included in the group show, fautlines, here at san francisco’s rare device, and those pieces are now available on their website. for much more about martha’s work, check out UNIFORM natural and her workbook site, as well as her lovely online shop.

What is your idea of a perfect day in Minneapolis?
My perfect day would be a Saturday in late November or early December. I wake up early and have coffee alone before everyone else gets up. It’s snowing big, fat, slow flakes. My two sons and husband get up and we walk over to our local bakery/cafe for raisin rolls and cinnamon buns. When we’re finished we take a walk through the little hardware store next door — we all love hardware stores.

After that we head over to the Walker Art Center for First Free Saturday, which is the Walker’s family day. There are kids tours of the galleries, art projects based around the current collections, films and music/dance performances. It’s really fun to be able to engage modern art at their level.

After a quick lunch at home we bundle up and go over to our local sledding hill, a few blocks from our house. It’s steep and icy and ends at Minnehaha creek which runs horizontally across the city. If you’re lucky you get up enough speed to skate right across the ice to the far bank.

In the afternoon we visit a favorite bookstore in the uptown neighborhood, Magers & Quinn and then go around the corner and have a snack at Lucia’s to Go, the little sister cafe to Lucia’s, Lucia Watson’s legendary Minneapolis restaurant (the twin cities equivalent to Alice Waters). The rest of the afternoon is spent lounging around reading our new books and watching it snow.

What don’t you leave home without?
lip balm. editor’s note: i’m going into the lip balm business, because there is hardly an unexpected guest who does not leave home without lip balm. ;)

What’s your favorite local shop(s)?
I love AX-MAN surplus. It’s a little store that sells a wide assortment of mostly useless things. One of the best parts is that they label everything with funny little hand lettered signs. I could wander there for hours looking at spools of wire in 25 different colors, bins of “tiny little white things” and paper target bulls-eyes.

My favorite food store is Surdyks wine and cheese shop. They are actually 2 shops, side by side (here in MN you can’t sell food and liquor in the same store). The cheese shop has a wonderful selection of artisanal cheese from local makers as well as other specialty food and deli items. The service is spectacular – they love cheese and love to tell you about it. The wine store has the best wine and beer selection in the city, including all the locally made craft beers.

I have two favorite furniture stores: Roam, which sells modern home furnishings and housewares, including the complete line from local furniture maker Blu Dot, and Danish Teak Classics, which sells vintage and new Danish modern furniture.

What’s on your wish list?
The La Tropézienne bag in brown by Clare Vivier.

What’s your favorite bargain find or product?
Tall rubber wellie type boots from Fleet Farm. They are about $25, but you can often get them on sale for $20. Mine are gray. Fleet Farm is a farm type big warehouse store we have here in Minnesota. It’s sort of like Home Depot for farmers, hunters and outdoorsmen. I love looking through the selection of galvanized buckets, utilitarian canvas clothing and different types of twine and string.
What is your biggest interior design nightmare?
every wall in a house or apartment painted a different color.

Who is your favorite artist(s)? And why?
Ann Hamilton. Ann works as an installation artist, but has a background in textiles and often uses textiles and needlework in her her work. Her work is large and visually engaging but subtle at the same time. Personally I am drawn to repetition – field vs object -and the aspect of repetition, whether it be field of 1000′s and 1000′s of pennies, or a huge pile of denim workshirts on a table, is something that is often present in her work. I think what I connect with the most in her work is the way in which each piece has a strong concept or meaning behind it and that meaning has many layers. She uses words extensively in her process, and they are often unusual and lyrical.

Where do you find inspiration?
I think this is a difficult question. Inspiration is everywhere, all the time. It’s quite overwhelming for me actually. But I rarely see something and have a vision of how it will influence my work at that moment. I think of my job as being 90% observation and collecting. When I see something interesting or beautiful or quirky, I record, document and save it. I have a sketchbooks and file folders where I keep images and doodles and notes and I think the inspiration comes from the juxtaposition of these things. When they are put together in some tangible form I start making connections and then ideas come from that.

Do you collect anything?
I used to collect mid-century dinnerware by the designer Russel Wright, and I have a modest collection, but I’ve stopped. I’ve realized that I’m more at ease with a minimal amount of stuff around me, and I’ve been purging belongings. It’s really a continuous project.

What’s your favorite feature in your home?
The natural light. We are lucky to have tons of natural light at all times of the day.

If you could photograph anyone in the world, who might that be?
The Japanese architect Kazuyo Sejima. Her face has so much character, grace and poise.

Who would you like to sit down to drinks with?
My mother’s father. He passed away before I was born, so I never got to meet him. He drove a candy delivery truck stocked with big glass jars full of candy, pretzels and peanuts. Sort of like a rolling version of the candy store Charlie visits in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. My mom still has one of the huge glass jars.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?
candy, especially the fun colored and packaged candy from japan.

What’s souvenir did you bring back from your last trip?
I didn’t actually bring anything physical back, but I was fortunate to meet a really wonderful person whose personality and outlook on life had a profound impact on me. I’ll always remember our time together.

What is your idea of living hell?
public speaking.

What are some of your favorites websites and blogs to visit?
2 or 3 things I know, site inspire, and but does it float.

unexpected guests: johnny & stacie.

this week we’re dropping in on a super creative couple, artists and of johnny&stacie. johnny and stacie love to make things, and share them with us in their etsy shop by, well, the same name johnny&stacie! the couple met in college over drinks while discussing art, and four and half years later the two were married. johnny and stacie live in Saint Paul, Minnesota with their adorable and much beloved dog Ruby. Stacie is an art teacher by day, and Johnny likes power tools and is a freelance designer by day. let’s take a look at the stylish artist co-op they live and run their studio from. you can also see more of their ‘a poster a day’ project here on flickr. thanks for the tour, guys!

What city/neighborhood do you live in?
We live in the Tilsner Artist Cooperative in lowertown Saint Paul, Minnesota. The Tilsner is a renovated warehouse from the 1800’s that is currently a residential artist community located right next to the Mississippi river and Saint Paul farmers market.

What is your idea of a perfect day in Saint Paul?
The morning would be a good cup of coffee followed by a dog walk with Ruby, our little terrier, in the bird sanctuary we live near. We would spend the afternoon perusing various thrift stores and maybe take in a movie. Sushi, drinks, and live music with friends would be the perfect evening.

What don’t you leave home without?
Our iphones and a sketchbook or two.

What are some of your favorite local shops?
The Axman surplus store is fun, quirky, and filled with so many wonderful items you don’t really need but can easily talk yourself into spending a quarter on. We also love Swank Retro, a little vintage shop with everything from modern to kitsch. Hunt and Gather is another favorite thrift store with an awesome and inspiring collection. Last is Wet Paint, a locally owned art store with a nice variety of supplies and knowledgeable and friendly staff.

What’s on your wish list?
We have been on the look-out for a letterpress for awhile, and we definitely would love to be able to travel more. Eventually we hope to own a home too.

What’s your favorite bargain find or product?
Our blue dot furniture that we scored for super cheap at their factory sale in Minneapolis and the Eames shell chair that johnny got for a very low price and refinished for my (Stacie’s) birthday.

What is your biggest interior design nightmare?
Too much carpet, fake flowers, bad massed-produced “hotel art” that matches the sofa.

Who is your favorite artist? And why?
We both feel like we are inundated with too many talented and brilliant artists on a daily basis to choose one or two that are favorites. Honestly, I (Stacie) teach elementary art and my favorite artists are my students. They are honest, uninhibited, hardworking, and they have wonderful imaginations.

Where do you find inspiration?
Everywhere! As corny as it may sound, we keep our senses engaged, because inspiration can often be where you least expect it. The internet is a phenomenal tool for finding inspiration, but you also have to go out a live life.

Do you collect anything?
We have amassed quite a collection of mid-century furniture and also have and assortment of vintage globes.

What’s your favorite feature in your home?
Wood floors, ceiling height, and old beams are the best parts of our space.

Who would you like to sit down to drinks with?
Our family–with love them so much and don’t see them often enough.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?
Feel too guilty to share them! Probably related to some deliciously awful food we shouldn’t be eating.

What is your most treasured belonging?
Is a dog considered a belonging? This is a tough question. We really try not to look at our belongings too preciously. But our dog ruby is perfect!

What’s souvenir did you bring back from your last trip?
A fuzzy, flocked jackalope coin bank from the great state of South Dakota.

What’s your greatest indulgence?
art and design books.

What is your idea of living hell?
Not having a supportive and loving family or being stuck in a relationship with someone you don’t love or who doesn’t love and respect you.

What are some of your favorites websites/blogs to visit?
ffffound, all the mountains, FOR ME, FOR YOU, Fine Little Day, design*sponge, the house of milk, Design for Mankind, 2 or 3 things i know, aaaahhhh! way too many to choose from!

*some photos courtesy of james ramsay photography.
