oooh. ahhh. that’s pretty much the sounds i uttered when i came across New York-based architect Elizabeth Roberts’ minimalist live-work loft space on brides.com’s home décor files (i do believe they are re-purposing old domino articles under their publisher, condé nast’s umbrella, which is great!).

ms. robert’s loft, which is located in an old soap and wax factory in the West Village, is a study in less is more, and simply quite stunning. how much do you love the contrast of those dark wood floors versus the white beamed ceilings? dramatically beautiful, is it not? i love how she divided her work space from her bedroom alcove, creating privacy using an ikea loft curtain on a hospital track, mounted to the wood ceiling. genius, and such efficient space planning. for a bit more on the space and the general floor plan, visit elizabeth roberts’ website.

i think we all long for the days of the now demised domino. and thankfully some of the new magazines, like anthology (coming soon!), and online magazines like rue, and lonny are helping to fill that void, providing us with those pretty pictures we miss. the online mags may not be the same as flipping through and unintentionally dampening the pages in our bubble baths, but i think lonny really heard our cry for help, when they created their new website ‘decorate’.

just like domino’s deco files, decorate is filled with all kinds of decor inspiration for every room, and just about every style you might be looking for. it’s no secret that many in the lonny camp came from the pages of domino’s editorial staff, so i think you’ll find some of what you’ve been missing here. thanks, lonny! maybe i can’t take you in the tub, but i think we all appreciate you hearing our plea for pretty.

can this photograph be a kitchen? i hope so, because my new kitchen has those vintage yellow and black tiles, kind of like these (below) with white cabinets and appliances. so i went on the hunt for some inspiration for keeping it clean, bright and not too fussy. i don’t want to get too kitschy, i want it to have a nice contrast between the retro 1930′s tile, and a fresh, modern look. here’s just a few of my ideas.

the 1930′s tiles in my kitchen are a bit more muted or faded from age, but similar to this via markbakerstudios.

i plan to have my little white knoll tulip table in the kitchen nook, like this cute kitchen from the domino deco files (above & below), and i think i’ll paint my bentwood cafe chairs black to put around the table.

perhaps some black & white pieces to accessorize with, like these tiles from emma’s design blog, and fresh lemons are always a nice smelling idea.

i want to play up the black & white, like these kitchens via door sixteen, and emma’s design blog, and i’d like some black & white tea towels like this one (below) from skinny laminx.

perhaps some Cathrineholm pots, like these via krakencrafts.

i like these clean counter tops, and bertoia chairs are a nice option too, via candimandi.

i’ll no doubt need some fun vintage yellow ceramic serving pieces, like these via vintage-love, and perhaps some cheerful artwork, like this ‘death cab for cutie’ print from the small stakes.

i saw this glorious polaroid image (above) the other day, and it somehow reminded me it’s still snowing in many of your hometowns. so i thought i’d share a look at the season’s creamy winter whites. i find these images i discovered around flickr so soothing and peaceful. like the hush of fresh fallen snow. not that we have any of that here in san francisco, but you know how i like to put my imagination cap on. here’s a little white on white.

it’s a new year, and time for new beginnings! i’ve been thinking i need a change from all my white on white, so which direction do i head? to black — exactly the opposite! i love these rich, black and charcoal gray walls, and am just trying to get up the guts to go for it! i’ve been taking a peek at what colors benjamin moore’s got (like Baby Seal Black), and i think painting some dark charcoal gray-almost black walls might look dramatic and quite stylish in my living room with the copper fireplace, and the contrast of all my white furnishings. here’s some yummy examples! shall i go for it?

one of the things i love about flickr, or photography in general, is that a single image can inspire all kinds of interior decor ideas. when i saw this flickr image from reflect / refract (center), it made me feel all wintery and think of beautiful warm rooms decorated in shades of grays, black and white, so i put together a sort of inspiration or mood board, in the form of a mosaic.

i found many of these images from members of the h ♥ m e and sfgirlbybay pools on flickr, as well as my old domino deco files. as i’ve mentioned before, that’s why i feature a lot of photography on the blog — to hopefully jump start your creativity and promote a new way for you to look at the world. any simple image can inspire a whole new look, or color scheme.

this is another mosaic i created inspired by karina’s beautiful black & white image (center). i found some of these photos from anna at door sixteen, who always has a wonderful source of collected black & white decor images in her flickr photostream, as well as kirsten from SimplyGrove, souvenirs du passé récent and  ivy style33, who also have some lovely images added to the h ♥ m e and sfgirlbybay pools. to make your own inspirational mosaic boards, visit big huge labs.

i’m back (oh heck, did i ever really leave??) on my white kick. lots of fresh white furnishings as a backdrop to even more shades of delicious, creamy, crisp white. white has just as many shades, as say – blue, or pink, or any other color in the beautiful rainbow really. i just love that Scandinavian, clean white vibe! i think white gets a bad rap sometimes. people complain it’s hard to keep clean, but coming from a girl with mostly white interiors (and at one time a big hairy brown dog) – hey, white is nothing compared to say, trying to clean my black linoleum kitchen floor clean. that, my friends is a true struggle. the white stuff – i just toss those slip covers in the washer and dryer and they come out just like new! let’s take a gander at some flickr found inspiration, shall we? viva white!
