help out a woman in need.

A young woman in the San Francisco community, Anandi, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. A small group of people have put together an online art auction to raise money to support her. From homemade jam and original artwork to vintage posters and ceramics, there’s something for everyone. Do your holiday shopping early while supporting a friend in need. ( Help spread the word, too, via Facebook, Twitter, or your own blog.)

She has begun chemotherapy, and will be facing major surgery soon. She has health insurance, but it does not cover such necessities as supplements, healthy food, transportation to her many appointments, complementary care to reduce the side effects of chemo, or herbs to help fight the cancer. She also needs financial support for her basic living costs that have risen dramatically as a result of this illness. All of the art has been donated in the interest of hooking her up with everything she needs, by artists like Lisa Congdon, Eric Rewitzer, Janet Nechama Miller and many more — visit the auction site to see the complete list of artists.

The auction opens for bidding today, November 9th and closes on Monday, November 23rd. All items will be mailed to auction winners no later than December 1st. Thanks, and enjoy the auction.

for the next week, July 16 – 23, etsy artist jill dryer is donating 100% of her sales proceeds to a single mother in Chicago with 5 children who really needs a lift. There is much to the story, but jill explains that the woman is unable to work anymore (due to a severe illness which also resulted in the loss of her job of many years – driving a CTA bus) and she’s doing her best to keep food on the table for her children. And, in addition to raising her own kids, as well someone else’s since they had nowhere else to go. such a lovely gesture…jill just wanted to try and give hope to someone who could really use it. to see jill’s beautiful artwork, and to help a woman in need, visit jill dryer’s etsy shop, and pick up some lovely art!

Sunday Soup Supper.

I wanted to let you know about a special community event happening this Sunday, April 26, at Pizzaiolo restaurant in Oakland. The food at Pizzaiolo is strictly seasonal and local, prepared with great expertise and love by Charlie Hallowell (an ex-Chez Panisse chef) and his gifted team. The Sunday Soup Supper is a community outreach event providing free soup to those in need. What’s different is that Pizzaiolo’s regular paying customers are also encouraged to attend and enjoy the soup on a donation basis — bringing together the diverse segments of our neighborhood population to eat delicious soup and bread together.

Further, the proceeds from the paying customers will be donated to the local women and children’s shelter, A Safe Place. Much of the produce for the meal is being donated by the local farmers that regularly supply the Pizzaiolo kitchen. Sounds like a great (and delicious!) way to give back to the community, and dine on some yummy gourmet soups!

Date: Sunday, April 26
Time: 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Location: Pizzaiolo, 5008 Telegraph Ave, Oakland 94609
Cost: Sliding scale $0 – $10 per person; all are welcome!
The meal: Two soup options (one vegetarian), Acme bread, and BYOB
