whoa. that’s all i have to say about the latest issue of est magazine. issue no. 4 of est just knocked my socks off. if i could pin it i would pin almost every single page. if you’re a scandinavian design lover-freak like me, you gotta go look at est — like right now. and subscribe — it’s free! est is just amazing. i’m still processing all the goodness, but had to post about it right this minute.

oh, and on a side note: this Safari Chair by Kaare Klint they featured. i need it — along with a few of these other very lovely items. thanks est — more to add to my very long existing wish list!

the very lovely stylist, photographer and author, Pia Jane Bijkerk has been capturing my attention and imagination for years. her photographs of places like amsterdam and paris always make me long for travel, and drive me to create eclectic spaces that put me at ease, as much as they inspire. pia’s shared a few things she coveting with me, and now she’s got me wishing for them as well! i’m excited to bring you pia’s beautiful “it list”.

1. I’ve been coveting a cassandra ellis quilt for some years now. I love her choice of fabrics and her modern patterns, and I also love that she makes quilts from your own fabric collection. She runs courses on quilt making in the UK, and this October her first book, Quilt Love, will be published.

2. Armadillo & Co make the most beautiful woven rugs, each one is ethically produced and made by hand. The founders are Jodie Fried (from Bholu) and Sally Pottharst, who both have a lovely aesthetic. I love the entrance mats, bold striped runners, and I adore the flower mat, it would look so lovely on my cork kitchen floor.

3. I’ve been wanting to do a weaving course for ages – Harriet Goodall holds day workshops here in Australia, and I’m hoping to attend at least one this year. I’d love to learn about what materials I can use to make simple, loose baskets, and if I am daring enough, I’d love to try my hand at making a light shade for my office. 4. Speaking of workshops, I’ve also always wanted to do a ceramics course of sorts, creating free form vessels and small sculptures using modern and ancient techniques. I’d love to make things like bone china feathers, chimes, plant tags, bottles and tea cups. This collection by Una of House of Ceramics is so sublime. And I adore my friend Kylie Johnson’s work where she imprints her poetry into the clay – you may recognize some of her pieces in Anthropologie.  And one of my long-time favorite ceramicists is Emmanuelle Wittmann (who I featured in my book, Paris: Made by Hand) – Emmanuelle holds workshops, so next time I’m in Paris I’ll have to make sure I attend!

5. I am right into paper art at the moment, and I am smitten with this petit paper & shell sculpture by Erika Ekrem of Odelae. How sweet is this? And so creative, very clever. I’m inspired.

6. Island retreating. Yes, I love a bit of jungle living, and one such place is Langkawi, just off the east coast of Malaysia. My partner and I have been traveling there once a year for the past few years, staying mostly at the Bon Ton  which has two fabulous restaurants. I love to imagine myself living in such a place one day, surrounded by huge coconut palms, sipping iced tea in my jungle hut (dreams can come true, right?).

the new issue of uppercase magazine is out, and this one is definitely good on paper! this issue (i can hardly believe it’s already issue no. 12!) focuses on the art of paper, and careers in that time old tradition of ink on paper. you remember that, don’t you? i contributed an article about the Danish paper company Rie Elise Larsen, after having had a most inspiring phone conversation with partner Mette Brix-Riisager all the way over in denmark. but check out the entire issue for some truly beautiful photographs and stories.

janine vangool of uppercase also hosted an amazing and fun mini party at alt summit this year, and took some notes on all of the great panel discussions, so if you’d like to check those out, pop over here. thank you janine, for a really wonderful event!

Llamas’ valley, or Lamų slėnis is an e-magazine about “perfect places and imperfect people. It’s about inspiration, creativity, joy, cosiness, delicious life…”. it’s full of Lithuanian design, photography and inspiration featuring creative studio spaces and homes of creative folk, and this issue includes a wonderful Q & A with one of my favorite bloggers, Emma Fexeus of emma’s design blogg.

and a few more after that! so pretty! it didn’t take long before i was addicted to tracking down the next issue. it can be tricky to find on this side of the ocean, but’s it’s worth it! (of course, you can always order it online). issue after issue i am blown away by the beautiful photography, quirky articles, and the fabulous combination of fashion, music, art and craft. somehow they make all of it work together seamlessly:

see? sock pets, swimsuits and caravans all existing happily together! and with modern, yet vintage, spreads like this (all about brooches & pins, from issue 33) how can i not have a girl crush on frankie!

gah! love!!! the other very crush-worthy thing about frankie, is that they do an artist feature (often several pages long) in every issue. i’m pretty sure that frankie and i could be bff’s because we write about the same people all the time. here are a few of my favorites (yep, it’s three girl crushes within a girl crush!):

my friend lisa coris, a jewelry designer and artist, has a beautiful home tour of her san francisco apartment in the new online magazine, modern ink. i’ve featured lisa’s fab art-filled, mid-century modern influenced apartment here, but since she’s always on the hunt for great vintage treasures, it’s fun to see an update. check out the whole tour and lisa’s tips for vintage thrifting finds, too! modern ink’s a great new design magazine!

at.elier is a Dutch design studio, founded in 2010 by Amy Jadine van der Veer and Tessa de Guytenaer, both students of Textile Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, The Netherlands. their Habitat collection includes room dividers, carpets, window panels and lamps, focusing mainly on interior design with a unique and distinct style all their own.

Because of a lack of exclusive and affordable jewelry and bags, Tessa and Amy decided to jump in and design these too, and thus their Wearables collection was born, which is amazing. at.elier works with natural materials, like leather, wool, wood and silver — durable materials that enrich the quality of their designs. at.elier designs are timeless and accessible, functional and aesthetic, powerful and elegant, and all products are unique and made by hand.

i really love that deconstructed, minimalist look we’ve been seeing around. pulling it off, that’s another story. i mean, where the heck would i put all my stuff? somedays, i long to chuck it all and start with just the bare minimum — simple, clean, keeping just the really interesting pieces of decor. those showcase pieces displayed on beautiful spare wood (or white!) floors, and oooh, if i had some exposed brick? even better. turns out i may get the chance — my landlady would “like her house back” so i’ve gotta move. the question is where? got any ideas?

love the industrial desk and simple slate back chair, via desire to inspire. and these slate chairs from mjölk are beautifully simple, too. the ultra simplistic, and yet so pretty — ‘Slim Jim’ table by Roland Graf for Fredericia Furniture; love the leather bag slung with the kraft paper bunting, almost like a work of art, via musta tuntuu.

i’d like to display my shoes and accessories like this, via vtwonen; black sheep white light keeps it really simple with their sheepskin throws; and i quite like this beamed ceiling glammed up with a 70′s chandelier. very unexpected!
