alison from teenangster is bringing you another fun post! All cats, all the time.

I never used to be a cat person: I was raised to be a wet nose squishing, puppy yawn breathing dog lover. My only familiarity with cats was chasing the feral kittens hiding in my grandma’s barn (I don’t remember ever catching one, though there is a yellowed photo of me in a tiny coat clutching a horrified kitten to my chest). Dream Cats made me a believer in the elegant allure of kitties: the arched backs, knowing stares, squished faces (enh!), and imagined tiny mews made my heart go pitter pat. Described as “girls & cats, cats in soft focus, cats on film, dream cats,” these artfully photographed felines — curated by the always awesome Anabela of fieldguided and Erin of atlantic treefox — show cats for their prowess, poetic quiet and general badassery. I’ve now got two little dream kitties of my own to snuggle and I couldn’t be happier.

today we’ve got a little bit of fun, albeit morbid curiosity from alison of the awesome blog, teenangster.

I’m a morbid sort of lady. While working as a library page I spent countless hours in the serial killer and prison section of the stacks reading up on jailhouse tattoos, murderers, pathological liars, weirdos and other sordid types.

I’m not sure I can really explain the appeal of those who’ve broken society’s rules; it’s just fascinating to read their stories from the safe distance of a book that can be closed, rather than an accompanying cell. This collection of mug shots shows the character and emotions of pickpockets, petty criminals and horse wranglers of the Old West that stood accused. I can’t help but wonder what became of them.

i saw this fantastic and inspiring image (above) at vintage printable (which i found via design for mankind – thank you, erin!) and then i couldn’t help but notice all the turquoise that kept popping up in the sfgirlbybay flickr pool. so, i thought it might be a fun color study to seek out some more, and share a little bit of design inspiration in the form of that very ‘poppie’ color turquoise blue! thanks very much everyone, for including these inspiring images in the group!

my name is Tif and i am a ‘GC’ ADDICT (“oooh, what’s that Tif?” i hear you exclaim).

well let me enlighten you, dearest readers of Victoria’s lovely blog, ‘GC’ stands for Granny Chic, and i fear, i am completely hooked on its addictive charms — it started off with a doily several years ago, harmless enough some might say, but that little doily led to another doily and in no time at all, my home had taken on a completely ‘dolified’ personality.

next came the potholders, once again one may be forgiven for believing such an item to be most harmless, but let me tell you from firsthand experience, they get under your skin, infiltrate your ‘cravings’ and before you know it, a pile of the ‘crocheted wonders’ are sitting by your side looking to you for a ‘home’ to keep them loved and safe. i can still remember my first encounter with a potholder — an ordinary day in the life of moi, whilst out ‘a thrifting’, i came upon a lonely potholder, i noted its greenness, i then noted its circular loveliness, i hesitated for a mo, then i picked it up. that was my fatal mistake — in that instance i was under its spell and so began the need to ‘collect’ potholders.

somewhere between the doilies and the potholders i started another ‘want’ of granniness, the ‘afghan’ blanket. often trailing up and down the aisles of any thrift store i happened to pass by, ‘hoping and a praying’ that the most loveliest of lovely granny blankets was waiting for me. no ‘neon acrylic’ scratchy number, no ‘seen better days’ crusty number — just the most perfect colored, soft number for me, please. on occasion i have found such a blanket, very rare but when it happens my little heart beats a little faster and i ‘pounce’ to claim my granny treasure before another intrepid ‘thrifter’ spies it.

until now i had no name for my ‘granny’ condition. but recently i discovered to my excitement, my addiction has a name, and that name is ‘Granny Chic’ and better still i’m not alone with my addiction. and better than that (“what could possibly be better than that Tif?” i hear you cry). why dear readers of this lovely blog, better than that, there is a flickr group where ‘granny chic’ addicts can post their pictures in a safe ‘granny loving’ environment and find support for their ‘grannifying’ ways, openly encouraging us to pursue our love of all things ‘crocheted and vintage’ and just downright grannified. but most importantly of all, letting us know it’s okay to be a GC ADDICT.

and so before i leave you to rush over to the nearest and dearest old lady and rummage around in her attic (asking first, of course) or perhaps fishing out the old ‘hook and yarn’ to create your very own afghan blanket, may i suggest you pour a glass of your favorite tipple, locate that chocolate bar you hid for such an occasion and take a few minutes to peruse emma lamb’s wonderful flickr group and i am quite sure without a doubt, you will be inspired to follow me down the path of ‘granny chic’ love. she is thanking Victoria most kindly for allowing her a platform to share her ‘granny chic’ ways. ~ Tif

since i’m off on holiday this week (stay tuned for some great guest bloggers!), i thought i’d take you all along, in the form of some summery inspiration via the sfgirlbybay flickr pool. even if you can’t get away, some great staycation ideas abound.

find wonder in life’s simple pleasures. visit the farmer’s market and do some preserving or do some baking. plan a backyard picnic, take a splash in a nearby pool, ride a bike around your neighborhood and hit some yard sales. oh heck, lay around in the coolest room in the house and read a good book! i hope you all are enjoying your summer, and if you’ve got a great staycation idea for us, please, by all means share with us in the comments! here’s a leisurely look at some summery staycation inspiration.

it may be summertime, but in san francisco, that doesn’t always mean warm and sunny. it can be downright chilly, and today the fog keeps rolling in and out. perhaps that’s why i was drawn to some of these cozy images from the sfgirlbybay group on flickr. i’m trying to share as many of these images with you each week as i can, and i love all that you’ve contributed to the pool. today, let’s curl up and get cozy, from beautiful homemade crocheted blankets, to pretty pillows — it’s time for some not so cold comfort.
