Wish You Were Here. A Photographic Travelog from Piewacket.

This is Lara Rossignol from the blog, Piewacket and I am excited to be contributing to sfgirlbybay with a new monthly feature “Wish You Were Here” chronicling some of my travels and favorite places. I am a professional photographer who grew up in Los Angeles, lived in NYC for 16 years, and now resides in Atlanta. Visit me here each month, and one of the places we will hit first is a foodie wonderland called Star Provisions.

Located in the booming “Northside” area of the city, Star Provisions is an unusual mixture of gourmet market, bakery, coffee bar, retail shop and cafe. All set in front of one of Atlanta’s best 5-star restaurants, Bacchnalia. Created by Chef owners and partners, Anne Quatrano and Cliff Harrison who had the idea to offer for sale the same quality of ingredients and cookware they themselves use in their restaurants and home.

The butcher shop offers an amazing selection of meat and seafood as well as an array of seasonings and other hard to find accompaniments. They even cure there own salamis.

Next door is the cheese shop, a fromage lover’s dream.

In the bakery there is a wonderful selection of breads, cookies and cakes. My favorite, the brown sugar shortbread cookies.

In the main retail shop, a larger selection of housewares beautifully displayed that can keep you busy browsing for quite some time. They also have one entire wall devoted to Orla Kiely handbags and accessories!

In their cafe, they serve up excellent sandwiches (I love the shrimp po’boy & pulled pork on cheddar biscuit) and salads, or take home a chicken pot pie for dinner. There is also a nostalgic mix of candies and sundries from jelly beans to Mary Janes and the cupcakes are a must!

Friday Food File With Molly Watson: Berry Fool.

My friend Samantha may just kill me for revealing this secret. I introduced her to this dinner-party-perfect dessert a year ago and my sense is that she’s been working it ever since. It’s easy, you can make it ahead, it looks as pretty as can be, and people LUV it. It’s Berry Fool. With strawberries red and ripe everywhere one looks at markets these days, I thought I’d help you find a way to ingest and serve more of them easily.

A fool is an old-school British dessert of mashed or pureed fruit folded into whipped cream. That’s it. I’m not even kidding. Sweeten it to taste and add a splash of liqueur or eau-de-vie if you’re so inclined, but that is it. But like so many brilliantly simple dishes, most people wouldn’t guess – and may not even believe – that that’s all there is to it. So feel free to tell them how you made it. Next time they have a dinner party they will call you and say “Remember that berry desert you made? I’m having people over next week and want to make it. I know you told me, but I forgot, how do you make it?” And you will tell them again. Then they will call you the day of the party and say, “I’m sorry, I know you told me, but how do I make it again?”

Be kind. Be patient. Explain again how to make it.

“Is that all?” They’ll say, yet again, and you will assure them, yet again, that yes, that is it. Why are the simplest things always the most difficult to remember?

Friday Food Files With Molly Watson: Strawberry Muffins!

Um. I don’t mean to cause a panic, but has anyone else noticed the strawberries that are suddenly and overwhelmingly absolutely everywhere? Stacked outside stores, smeared over toddlers faces, proffered on street corners. I’m not really mentally prepared for this much spring all at once. It’s still cold outside!

Refreshing berries are hardly called for in this weather! Of course for now, just eating them, gorging on them, stuffing them one by one into your mouth will probably keep strawberry lovers amused, but if you’re looking for a bit of cozy this weekend try these Strawberry Ricotta Muffins. “Strawberries in baked goods,” you ask, “but don’t they make the muffins soggy?” Well, the would, if the recipe didn’t call for you to roast them first. Ooh la la, these muffins are sweet (but not too sweet), tender, warm, and perfect for a cold spring morning.

Friday Food Files With Molly Watson: Spring Asparagus.

May still be around the corner, but spring is here. How do I know? By the best sign there is: I had my first asparagus of the year this week. By the end of its season in early to mid summer I will be good and sick of the stuff, but right now, during this brightly sunny but curiously cold week in San Francisco, the clean grassy flavor of asparagus hits the spot.

This early in the season, when my love for asparagus remains strong and true, I like to keep it simple. One of my favorite ways to cook it is to roast it. A few years ago I also discovered that truly fresh, tender asparagus can be thinly sliced and used in salads (like this one, above) to great effect. For something a bit fancier, try asparagus with vinaigrette and hard-cooked egg.
