it’s been a little while since i’ve posted a separated at birth, so today i thought it was high time i got to it. they take me a while to put together so i gotta get in the groove to go on the hunt. a few neutrals and some dramatic black and white. i hope you enjoy the celebrity decor match-ups. which one would you wanna be?

1. well, well…here’s something to tweet. haha — pun intended. this is just but one of london-based artist claire brewster’s magnificent map papercuts. ahhhh, go on — put a bird on it, just one more time. via trendland.

2. do you like poloroids? do you like things just a little bit off-kilter? i mean that in the best of ways. then, yes, you will like the poloroid photographer of prop stylist jen gotch. go looksee. it’s super happy. it’s good. jen does lots of cool things, and this is just one of ’em.

3. apparently, even famous people ride bikes. it’s just the fun thing to do. and to celebrate, PUBLIC bikes is hosting a book signing party next Friday, February 24, 6–8pm at the South Park PUBLIC Headquarters. author Steven Rea who will share photos and discuss his new book Hollywood Rides a Bike. mark your calendars AND PRE-REGISTER HERE.

4. do you read anthology magazine? you really ought to. it’s actually printed (you know, the old-fashioned way on paper) and you’ll find some great home tours in it, like this one of stephen and shauna’s philadelphia loft. they are the creative duo behind something’s hiding in here — they’re rad, too.

5. there’s buildings in the desert of palm springs that look like spaceships. it’s true. some are really cool, mid-century modern treasures, and you can tour them if you head down to palm springs, california for modernism week. it’s on right this minute, from february 16 through the 26th. so cool. no, actually it’s really hot. you should go because it’s probably cold where you are.

6. are you into fashion blogs? this park & cube is a really truly nice one, with some blockbuster fabulous photos. this photo spread of the asos 2012 collection is simply sublime.

since the holiday season soirees are in full swing (already!) i thought it would be fun to go a little glam this separated at birth. and nothing says glamour like old hollywood starlets.

i’m seeing a lot of rustic wood these days. from wood grain patterns, to beamed ceilings — even cupcakes — those rustic, rough around the edges, but still very sleek, and sort of Scandinavian, wood accents are everywhere. and i’m in love with the look. i’ve always adored the look of a worn and warm wood furnishings mixed up with loads of fresh white, so i for one, am quite happy for this trend. here’s a look at wood.

I saw these images in a past issue of Architectural Digest and I just had to save them. I love the glamour and polished style of the ‘Old Hollywood’. It reminds me that people made more of an effort to shine, and dressed up more. Were more gracious and polite. Good manners mattered. Your home was where you entertained and people dressed in fabulous cocktail attire. I have fond memories of my parents dancing to the high-fi and drinking mai-tais all slicked up. It wasn’t unusual for my mom to wear false eyelashes on regular nights out.

As a little girl, there was a woman on our suburban L.A. block who dressed up every evening before her husband would arrive home from work. My mother and all her neighborhood housewife friends would make fun of her and point out how ridiculous and subservient she looked. While secretly, I think they were a bit envious. She always looked so pretty and would literally stand in the driveway as her husband pulled up. She had it timed. It was the sixties, so it wasn’t so strange. Call me anti-feminist, but I thought it was cool. It felt like they were in love. They looked happy. And who’s to say she didn’t dress up for herself, because it made her feel good. Imagine dressing up like this shot of Ava Gardner for just a typical day around the house. As much as we love our homes, I had an inkling we might be just as interested in our personal fashion style. So I just thought I’d see what you think about glamour and grace. I think it’s like living large. I mean, why not?

Do you remember how Samantha always had the cliche martini waiting for Darren in Bewitched? Don’t you think she had an ulterior motive there? He was always so cranky. I think she just needed to lighten his mood. I’m not saying we should go back to those times of waiting hand on foot on anyone, not at all. My point is only the fun part of it all. Maybe just embrace our fancy side once in a while. Just for fun. And really, just for us.

My friends mock me and seem to find it funny that I haven’t been swooped up for all my love of domestication. Ironically enough, I am the single girl among many married friends, but I am the one who probably would have dressed up and had a pretty good dinner on the table. And I have may have worked hard or blogged all day. Not all the time, but because it’s fun and I like it, I’d do it as much as possible. It’s just fun to be fancy.
