for the love of wes.

i completely love writer-director wes anderson. i just saw his latest film fantastic mr. fox which was excellent, and today listened to a podcast on kcrw’s ‘the treatment’, which you can download and listen to, as well. it was highly entertaining! and then i saw these – beautiful prints from some of my favorite films of his, including the royal tenenbaums, an all-time favorite. i found these dvd cover art designs by the criterion collection via grain edit, which is also high on my awesomeness chart. i just had to share my love of all things wes.

826 valencia is one of my favorite organizations, founded by author dave eggers, 826 is dedicated to teaching children (aka, pirates!) the art of writing skills and getting excited about the literary arts. and, i also love the 826 pirate supply store — think eye patches and spy glasses! this winter, four pirate brands have chosen 826 Valencia to be the exclusive distributor of some incredibly helpful pirate poster guides, all designed by a wonderfully talented crew of graphic artists at san francisco-based eleven inc.

The pirate posters cover everything from how to use stars to get you from place to place, to finding the perfect size for your peg leg, these posters are all part of our yearlong push to help new 826 pirates learn the tricks of the trade and to help seasoned pirates gain some extra seasoning. Hang them in the break room. Learn from them. Be the pirate society was always afraid you’d become. You can pre-order for your pirate now – orders start to ship Dec. 11th.

black is the new, ummm, black.

i know it’s not really a ‘color’ so to speak, but i wanted to see what my keep calm & carry on posters might look like in a nice chalkboard black. it’s not really ‘chalky’, but a nice rich, solid jet black, but the white type on black reminds me of a beautiful chalkboard. it’s turned out to be one of my favorites. if you like it too, you can find it in my etsy shop.

toot, toot. it’s a sale!

okay, so there comes a time when you just have to toot your own horn a little bit. i’m not that great at it. i’m not even very graceful when it comes to accepting compliments, but i’m trying to overcome that. so, with this little justification, i just had to share that i made the new york times. well, rather i should say ‘victoria smith’ (aka sfgirlbybay) made the nytimes, because they didn’t mention sfgirlbybay or the url to my etsy shop. the story, if you missed it, was about the ‘keep calm & carry on‘ posters that i carry, and the many incarnations the motto has taken on these days.

so in honor of making the nytimes, i’m having a little sale in my etsy shop. i’ve discounted all orders 20% today through the end of july, including my ’sunday in the city prints’. here’s the link to my etsy site — all markdowns have already been made! and thanks very much to the nytimes for the mention!

Little Rock-er.

Rosemary, a loyal reader of the blog, wrote to me to share a very talented friend of hers, artist Paul Michael Dellostritto. Rosemary wrote, “Little Rock is a pretty low key city, so anytime I can do my part to promote a local artist, I feel the need.” I think you’re going to be pretty excited she did.

Rosemary tells me that Paul Michael Dellostritto is a favorite artist in Little Rock, and that his hauntingly beautiful posters are always found gracing the walls of White Water Tavern, a historic dive bar that’s promoted local music for thirty years. He also makes commissioned posters for local and nationwide artists, as well as some fine art prints. Because most of the artists featured on his posters are local and friends of White Water patrons, many of Little Rock’s hipsters can be seen stealing his posters from the bathrooms to hang on their walls at home. But now, lucky for us, Paul’s just started selling prints for as low as $5 on his website, his work is so very beautiful and clearly affordable. I’ve ordered ‘beautiful’ one already! Thanks for the great tip, Rosemary!
