if you’re in the bay area this friday evening (november 6th), be sure to stop by rare device for an amazing new show from artists Amy Ruppel and Lisa Congdon, Gently by the horns. Lisa and Amy have put together a show paying homage to one of their favorite animal groups: the cloven hoofed, horned, furry creatures that belong to the family Bovidae. They each chose five different Bovids to render in their own own style, including the Yak, Duiker, Bongo and Chamois. The installation will also include horns and antlers from our collections and a fake fur chandelier.

Bonding Experience @ Rare Device.

octshow

Rare Device is one of my favorite stores and galleries in San Francisco, that features functional experiments and original ideas in art, design, craft and fabrication. Owners Rena Tom and Lisa Congdon constantly seek out objects that are beautiful, evocative, well constructed and thoughtful. And this week Rare Device is excited to share with you a new show: Binding Constant: New Work by Diem Chau, Marina Luz and Lisa Solomon. The work will appear in the Rare Device gallery from October 2 – November 1, with an opening party this Friday, October 2nd.

A reception for the artists will be held at Rare Device Friday, October 2 from 7 – 9 pm, with all three artists present for the opening. In Binding Constant artists Diem Chau, Marina Luz and Lisa Solomon explore the visible and invisible bonds we share based on relationship or causal connection. Hope to see you there!

Tiny Houses @ Rare Device.

If you’re in the bay area, be sure and make a note: San Francisco’s Rare Device is hosting a book signing for Mimi Zeiger, author of Tiny Houses tomorrow evening, Wednesday, April 8th from 6 – 8pm. Stop by for a snack and a drink, and say hello to Mimi and have your Tiny Houses book signed by the author.

Focusing on dwelling spaces all under 1,000 square feet, Tiny Houses by Mimi Zeiger aims to challenge readers to take a look at their own homes and consider how much space they actively use. Ranging from tree houses to floating houses, Tiny Houses features an international collection of over thirty modular and prefab homes, all designed to lessen one’s carbon footprint — in a literal way — each home has its own unique style, whether built from concrete, recycled wood, aluminum, metal, or indigenous materials and exemplifies the philosophy of treading lightly.

Rare, Indeed!

It was a lovely, warm night in San Francisco last night, which is pretty rare, and should always be savored! So, I wanted to share a few snaps from last evening’s super fun opening at Rare Device, just in case you couldn’t be there. Home: New Work by Julia Rothman and Caitlin Keegan will occupy the Rare Device gallery July 10 – August 1, 2008. So stop on by and see some fantastic artwork, and all the pretty things Rare Device carries to brighten up our homes. It was so nice to meet some new friends and faces! Thanks for a great party, girls!
