thoughts for a friday.

yipee! it’s the long holiday weekend. gosh, i love long weekends — that extra day is something i personally think we could all use every darn week. i know i could do with that many days of r & r all the time. i think it’s much easier to have a mini holiday when you’ve got that additional day off, right? i seem to have the more rustic side of life on my mind these days — trips to the woods, family cabins, campouts. and if the great outdoors isn’t exactly your thing — some camping spots have gotten pretty fancy-schmancy (they like to call it ‘glamping’) so it’s more like luxury camping than roughing it. what have you got planned for the long weekend? you staying indoors, or heading out?

moonrise kingdom is one of the great camp movies. you might already know how i feel about wes anderson, but this is director wes at his most sublime. as always, excellent casting and a nostalgic feeling that is spot on. the perfect movie escape if you’re not actually headed anywhere this weekend.

• or, maybe dirty dancing is more your kind of summer movie. i’ve always wanted to visit the adirondacks, or more specifically one of those summer camps for grownups like the one where the movie takes place. do they have places like that on the west coast? i think not. i wanna go somewhere where ‘nobody puts baby in the corner’.

• do you know that site cabin porn? it shares some of the most reclusive and cool cabins i’ve ever seen. from beach shacks to places that look like hobbit homes, i love daydreaming away on cabin porn (thanks luis for reminding me!).

whatever you do this weekend, have a blast!

  1. I love this. LOVE Dirty Dancing and Moonrise Kingdom and well, everything about this post! I would love to revisit camping trips of my past, we used to have an airstream…sitting under its awning lakeside was truly soo relaxing. I’m a little scared to try it in Alaska though…I much prefer nature without the threat of bears! Happy weekend!

  2. FANTASTIC choices! Big fan of both movies and Cabin Porn is a site I’m glued to! So much inspiration and daydreaming going on.

My husband and I are taking a little trip to Seattle to celebrate our first wedding anniversary! I’m really REALLY looking forward to it…

  3. I love the image of that canoe on a perfectly still lake. Reminds me that I need to make plans to visit our family in Canada this summer – a certain cottage on a lake is always involved! (We call them ‘cottages’ not cabins for some reason.) Thanks for the lovely post and happy weekend!

  4. You have fantastic taste. I love anything from Wes Anderson and we especially loved Moonrise Kingdom. And he had Francoise Hardy in the soundtrack! We actually live near Yosemite though we are moving soon. So we are planning another trip out there. We love the woods and the Ahwahnee is the ultimate in luxury in the woods!

  5. I hear ya sister. I’m all about hanging in the forest/in nature. So stoked for summer! I have never really just gone into the woods with a backpack and set up camp, but that is definitely what is appealing to me. Although, there is nothing bad about a secluded cabin. It’s just a must to have a big fire and lots of wool blankies.

PS Thank you so much for Cabin Porn. It totally isssss cabin porn. Awesome

  6. Great post! We are laying fairly low this weekend, so getting around to finally watching “Moonrise Kingdom” sounds like a great plan.

  7. Haven’t been camping since I was in Girl Scouts but this post is making me want to find a spot & just chill. And I loved Moonrise Kingdom!

  8. Hey Victoria! A cousin of mine lives in the Adirondacks with her husband and their 1 year old- actually, he and his team made the website that you linked to! It just recently launched! Small world! xo caitlin
