one of the big perks of writing a book about san francisco is the opportunity to visit neighborhoods i might not normally find purpose venturing to when i’m busy — now it’s my job, and i love it. one of those is the outer sunset district, a wonderful surfing community way out in ‘the avenues’ near ocean beach. it’s so lovely out here, with some charming new cafes, like andytown, and outerlands just re-opened with a much larger space, so perhaps the lines have dwindled a bit (always worth it, no matter the wait). and one of my favorite shops to stop in at — the general store never disappoints.

the general store is a wonderful clothing and home wares shop originally founded by Serena Mitnik-Miller and Mason St. Peter. in 2012 they opened location no. two in venice with partners, Hannah Henderson and John Moore. Local Artisans and Craftspeople contribute to the mix of furniture, clothing, tools, plants, household items, books, jewelry, cards and small treasures, a little bit of everything useful. Stop by the general store for a visit, and check out their charming greenhouse out back, too. i can’t wait to share more of the outer sunset with you in the book!

  1. What a groovy spot! Will have to try and visit when I’m back in SF in the Fall. Look at all those copies of Travel Almanac!!

  2. I was just there yesterday!!! I could spend hours in that store — the attention to detail and the way it so perfectly captures California makes it one of my favorite shops in SF. Lovely photos :)
