when you live in san francisco, and a lot of other big cities, it’s more than likely that your space may be small, and your bedroom smaller. space is at a premium, and so bed sides that can multi-task, and are efficient within the confines you find yourself become most attractive. a shelf above the bed to store small books or collections is perfect because going vertical is always like free space, right? it takes up no floor room at all, and looks great, too. i know what you’re thinking — in earthquake country? but i’m talking light objects — not the entire encyclopedia britannica stored up there! just a few light and lovely objects that perhaps mean something special to you. or perhaps just a simple stool or vintage chair beside your bed, stacked with your favorite reading material. if you find yourself with an extra dinner guest, voilá — there’s your spare chair! here’s an even dozen bedside space saving ideas for you.
a simple vintage crate hung with artwork is a great idea for displaying small collections; and the string lights are space savers too, via fancy.
a bedside reading lamp stacked on books looks pretty darn chic if you ask me, via urban outfitters.
holly marder’s bedroom makeover is stunning, and i love the magazines tucked away in this vintage nightstand; the retractable reading lamp is wonderful too, via avenue lifestyle.
when in doubt, go under. i love this palette-like platform bed frame for under the bed storage, via apartment therapy; and below muji’s bare utility bed via house & garden.
i loved the way bri at designlovefest’s bedroom makeover turned out, and this simple shelf was a perfect solution for small collectibles; photographed by laure joliet.c
holly marder shared this gorgeous and very cosy children’s bedroom with a great space saving shelf on decor8.
a simple side table with drawers in always a good place to stash the unsightly stuff, via mx living.
a great looking vintage chair makes for a handy nightstand (and extra seating should you need it elsewhere); the shelves above are an efficient use of space, too, via stadshem.
this built-in desk could also be used as a nightstand and library space, photographed by bruce buck for the new york times.
just a simple black stool with a flower in a vase can look so very stunning, via stadshem.

love them all, particularly the one featuring the beautiful exposed beams. that’s my favorite part of our current home.
I love this! I’m currently in the process of re-decorating my tiny SF room && this is great inspiration!!
Having just reworked the living room of my 380 sq ft Paris apartment, I’m setting my sights on the bedroom. This is just the sort of inspiration I needed!
I dig the simple bedding found in each of these rooms. Makes me want to take a nap.
I love all white rooms. I really want to paint everything white again. Looks so good with all of that natural light.
Amazing inspiration, just what I needed to help organize my room!
i love the idea of string light. great post
These are all lovely, but not one features a dresser or any place to store clothing. What gives?
i was just trying to focus on the bed area of the bedroom, so these photos just don’t depict the remaining parts of the room that may have a dresser.
Aack! I’m DYING for a white duvet or bedspread or white sheets. But with two toddlers that love to play on the bed…sigh. How do people keep them so clean? Am I just a Pigpen?
Oh that shelving from Designlovefest’s room is all I want for my bed room. But I have the feeling since she posted about it, it’s sold out and they will restock it in November! Who can wait till November? Already schemming how to do a DIY.
Where can I get the pallet style bed frame?
i wish i knew – it looks custom-built. i’ve never seen it anywhere else.
i love the use of neutral pallets and vintage furniture!!
