living with flowers. Flowers are one of the most visible ways to witness the changing of the seasons and connect to the natural world in our living spaces. Today, we’re looking at how to bring autumnal flowers and foliage into our homes as we transition into cozier months. If you fall into the camp that believes cut flowers are just for parties or Valentine’s Day, my hope is that by the time you finish reading, you’ll be excited to experience the joy that’s induced by surrounding yourself with flowers — for no other reason than taking pleasure in their innate beauty. People always say to “stop and smell the roses” as a way of adopting an attitude of being fully present, embracing life’s beautiful moments and living a “good life,” and making flowers part of my everyday experience is a way to remind myself that I don’t have to wait for special occasions — today is worthy enough.

“Breath of Fresh Air” Arrangement. While pumpkin and persimmon most certainly have their place as iconic fall shades, autumn arrangements don’t necessarily have to recall autumn leaves. Fall is also a time of fresh starts, and a light, bright palette perfectly conveys this clean-slate feeling. This tall, slender “breath of fresh air” arrangement uses iceberg roses, white ranunculus and trailing jasmine vines that reach outwards and upwards, gently taking up space and making a beautifully simple statement.

Choose the vessel. A tall, narrow vase maximizes the graceful shape of these flowers, allowing them to reach up and then cascade into a gentle horizontal shape. This patinaed brass container adds richness that helps bring light-colored blooms into a more autumnal frame of mind.

Choose the flowers. We stuck with the color palette that I use most frequently when arranging flowers for my home: classic green and white. It’s a combo that’s at home in any setting for any season, but it’s far from boring when it contains exquisitely-shaped roses and curling, twisting vines that add a playful touch to the composition. Since the ingredients for this arrangement are all on the thin and delicate side, you’ll want to use more stems than you think you’ll need in order to add fullness and create an overall look of abundance.

Put it together. When filling a tall narrow vase, use flowers with height, but that are delicate enough to not topple the entire thing over! Jasmine vines provides height and gracefulness without adding heaviness. Start by creating a shape with a few of the vines, add in the accent flowers, and then finish with a few more vines for added movement.
