i think most kitchens we see are often brightly lit, colorful and cheerful places to sit down for your morning coffee or bowl of fruit loops. but what do you think about a dark kitchen? a dramatic black and white space that’s a little more sophisticated is pretty great too. i wonder if i’d like a kitchen that’s predominantly black — could i wake up in a space like one of these, or rather would i sit stirring my coffee, staring aimlessly out the window, endlessly contemplating where the day will take me? what do you think — bright and cheerful, or dramatically different and dark? or, are just a few black accents or cabinets the way to go? oh my, such dark thoughts!

  1. Great post – especially love that kitchen with the range nestled in the wall. I painted my living room all very dark blue black, but living where it rains a lot, I find it a bit too dark in the winter. You need a lot of natural light coming in to make it work. So I agree with anna@ananbode that a room needs white to offset.

  2. yes!!! i love a little bit of black in a room to add sophistication. i have a black bar in my home and it just stands against the white kitchen perfectly. thanks for sharing!

  3. The different finishes of the black paint on the trim versus the wall is a subtle, yet stunning combination for a doorway.

  4. Hi there!

So I know this post is two years old. But those matte black tiles in that Elle Decoration picture are EXACTLY what I need. Do you have any idea for a source? The closest I can find are fireclay tiles in matte black but they’re inconsistent and the wrong size.
