the shutterbugs: frederik vercruysse / sfgirlbybay

a good friend of mine, the very talented photographer laurie frankel is traveling to belgium and asked me for some recommendations on what to see, since i traveled there a few years ago. i remembered the wonder of graanmarkt 13, which lead me somehow to the work of frederik vercruysse, who has worked with the beautiful concept store in Antwerp. frederik vercruysse is an antwerp, belgium-based photographer who describes his work as still life photography in the broad sense of the word. “approaching architecture and photography from the same angle, frederik sees furnished spaces as compositions”. i could see that instantly, and while sometimes somewhat austere and very minimalist, his images are incredibly beautiful to my eye. you might recognize some of his work from decor magazines like dwell, wallpaper and casa vogue. you can see his full portfolio at frederik vercruysse.

  1. If she/he’s looking for nice places in Brussels, there’s a few cool areas :) the “chatelain” has plenty of bars and restaurants, there’s a nice market on Wednesdays with local produce and oyster bars with champagne or white wine.
The centre of town is plenty of old and full of historical buildings, next to the “grand place” you have the “bourse” with numerous bars and restaurants, the “rue Antoine Dansaert” is the street with all the designer shops; rue des chartreux, has nice vintage, fashion and decoration shops. Have a look at the Bellerose store in that street!
“Place St Catherine” “rue de flandre” and “place du marché aux poissons” have nice architecture, trendy book stores, art galeries, different shops. And the place to go for a snack is “noord zee” fish tapas Belgian style, so yummy!!!
Place Flagey is always buzzing and has plenty of nice restaurants all around. Night life it crazy and fun in the “Belga” especially when there is a bit of sun. You can also go for a walk along the ponts and see the old abbey in the middle of the city.
The Sablon and the “marolles” are the “real” Brussels, with old quirky pubs where people speak bruxellois.
Antwerp, Gent, Leuven are beautiful cities from the north of the country. The ardennes in the south are rural and “back to nature”; go there for a nice walk in the woods, and finish the afternoon with a nice “trappiste” belgian beer with cheese or saucisson. Or a hot chocolate.
Charleroi, used to be the “not so cool” place, however they have plenty of art and photography exhibition at the moment! they have a great museum of photography there.
Liege is so close to the Netherlands and Germany; have a “bloulet sauce lapin” and a “pequet”.
OK… I’ll stop there ;) but you can see I LOVE Belgium :)
