martina thornhill is a self taught ceramic artist based in Portland, Oregon. she creates slab built, functional ceramic vessels from her home studio, using inspiration from nature, flea market treasures, primitive folk crafts, abstract art and cross country travels. her latest work caught my eye (pun intended here) — these sweet winking eye mugs, and sleepy eye pour overs, definitely have a primitive vibe. i can see these patterns carved into caves as love notes from long ago — wink, wink, i love you!

Drawing on her background in fiber arts, martina approaches her ceramics from a different perspective, Treating her clay like fabric she develop patterns, fuse seams, and uses her hands to create drape and flow. Clay bodies are chosen for the texture they bring to the piece and for their raw color contrast against glossy glaze patterns. These methods allow martina to create production pieces that still maintain a sense of individuality and personality — it’s important to martina that each piece is unique in the way it sits on the table, or fits in the hand regardless of how many she’s made. For martina, her craft is about more than my methods and the objects she creates. It is about curating a vision that takes into account her experiences and inspirations, and finds a connection in the homes and hearts of others. It is about slowing down and making every day objects special instead of disposable. visit her online shop to check out the rest of her beautiful ceramics.
