echo park. echo park / sfgirlbybay

get it? i have some news, which you may have already seen me announce on instagram or any number of my other social media accounts. but in case you haven’t, here’s the breaking news — i’m moving to echo park, a lovely neighborhood on the northeast side of los angeles. i made an offer on a great home, and the offer was accepted and i made it through the somewhat harrowing experience that is escrow — very much in part to my wonderful mum, and my awesome realtor rob kallick of take sunset. whew! i’m so excited to move in, and to share my new home with you! much more on that soon, and in the meantime i’m excited to share my brand new view of L.A. with you, too!

i know you’re very used to me sharing san francisco with you — afterall, i’ve lived here 20 years, and i’ve been blogging as sfgirlbybay since 2006, but my sincere hope is that you will come along for this new ride with me. my favorite part of taking photographs is sharing the unexpected beauty you can find, even when you least expect it. now, i’ll admit, san francisco is hard to top in the beautiful places department, but i assure you — as a native of los angeles, it too has loads of special nooks and crannies i can’t wait to share with you! beauty abounds in los angeles, and i’m going to make it my new mission to explore it with you. there’s bright bursts of flauna and flora — like the wild Bougainvillea that grows everywhere and the lush canyons, architecture from the 20’s and 30’s, beautiful beaches, and wonderful cafes and shopping. it’s all there, and i can’t wait to bring it into your view.

i know a lot of you have some questions about all of this — how will i still be SF Girl By the Bay? well, the URL will remain the same, and you can simply think of me as an SF Girl in LA. (and, I will soon have a URL SF Girl in LA that will redirect to the original web address). no need to make things too crazy — after all, one can’t live by one’s URL alone! i’ll also continue to visit (often!) and share the beauty of san francisco with the help of my regular contributors here. leaving san francisco will be challenging, for certain — it’s been a wonderful home to me. but it’s time for a change, and to be near family and i relish the idea of a new start. you know how much i love decorating a new space, and then sharing it with you, so it’s that kind of excitement that gets me through the bittersweet feelings of leaving a city i love so much. i hope you’ll continue to enjoy the blog, and will stay tuned for what’s ahead! i couldn’t be more thrilled to share my new home with you! — xo, victoria

  1. Congratulations . Buying a home can be such a traumatic experience. I’ve been reading for a very long time , your blogspot days. I remember finding your blog randomly and then forgetting your URL. I think I found it again by googling cool boho girl by window or something very random like that. I don’t think the URL is a big deal at all . I’m excited to follow this very exciting move. I’ve only been in LA for a quick stopover- I had “one day in LA” so I can’t wait to see your new posts. Very best of luck Victoria.

  2. Congrats! What a relief to be through escrow and know you can concentrate on the fun part – moving in and styling the place! Can’t wait for your photos and new adventures.

  3. Congratulations, V! May your new home provide endless opportunities for creativity and nesting! Can’t wait to see all you have in store for us!

  4. I was wondering what you would call your new site if you moved?! I’m so excited to see your new place. That’s the advantage of ownership, no restrictions on making it your own. Congratulations! I read your blog every day.

  5. I am thrilled for you and so excited to see the beautiful spots of LA. I am a desert girl myself and love all the plants – bougainvilleas, succulents, ocotillos, etc. I know you will be able to give us the scoop on places to visit and things to do. What a wonderful resource you are!
    Congratulations!

  6. I love Echo Park so much, it is my favorite LA neighborhood. Hopefully you will write about the wonderful boutiques there like Tavin and Beatrice Valenzuela. Congratulations!

  12. I am a native SF girl living in LA. Someday I will make the change in reverse to yours and will find myself back in my native SF, which I <3. In the meantime, LA is still my home and can't wait for your take on this amazing city with new places to seek and experience. 15. I never comment, but wanted to say welcome to the neighborhood! You seem to already have discovered some of the best places to go for necessities already (read: coffeeeee), so you’re in fine shape to make the move.

  16. Congratulations! I bought my first home in 90026 about ten years ago (just north of Sunset and Echo Park Avenue), but have since moved away… I wonder what it is like now and look forward to reading about all the wonderful things in the neighbourhood now.

  17. Congratulations, Victoria! Welcome back to Los Angeles. Very excited for you and to seem your new home & what loveliness you have in store.
Love Echo Park and hang out there often. Maybe I’ll get to finally meet you!

  18. THANK YOU EVERY ONE SO MUCH! I would so much like to try and reply to each one of you individually because I really appreciate your welcomes and well wishes. BUT, I’m in moving hell! :) I’ve got a big yard sale saturday which I haven’t even begun to sort stuff out for, the book launch, packing up the cottage AND my workshop in Tulum. Suffice it to say I’m a little freaked out. But one day at a time, and thank you all for the warm wishes. It really sets my mind at ease knowing you’ve got my back! XOXO, Victoria

  19. sfgirlbythebayinla, i was thinking you might go with this for your new blog name. it rhymes!

all best wishes on your exciting move. I look forward to seeing what you discover in l.a.

  20. Yay! Can’t wait to see your photos of my lifelong home, and to see it myself with fresh eyes.
I hope you will share with us some of the spots you find, so we can enjoy them and support local small businesses, too. If the photos in this column are an example, we’re in for some wonderful pleasures.

  21. Congratulations — you’ve found and bought your new home!! I admit selfishly looking forward to this — my brother and sister-in-law live in LA, so I’m usually there at least once when I make it home to the States . . .so I can take advantage of following you in that way.

Good luck with the yard sale and all that moving entails!

  22. Victoria – congratulations!! So excited for you! And goodness… I can’t wait to see what you do with your new space. Best of luck with the whole moving process. xo!

  23. So excited to see you work your magic in LA and the way you embrace change is ultra-inspiring (not to mention your sense of humor and killer eye):)

  24. Congratulations! I’m glad to see that you’ve found your nest. I love your blog and I can’t wait to see your new home and to follow your new adventure. Thank you so much for your inspiration!

  25. Congratulations!! Buying a house is like an arranged marriage . . .you just need to go with your instinct . . . .I’ve done this twice (in Oregon) and when you have great help through escrow . .and moving etc it’s wonderful! Have fun making it your own! I’m sure The City will miss you!

  26. I bought a “keep calm carry on” print from you years ago (maybe 10!?). You had the most darling apt in pac.heights that I was happy to see. I’ve followed your blog since then and I just saw your IG post about your move. Bitter sweet. I’ve slowly grown in family members, moved to east bay and will likely leave for Portland soon. I’ll miss seeing pretty SF through your eyes, but look forward to watching your EchoPark journey. Congrats! Out of curiosity…do you think you started that whole keep calm craze?

  27. Awesome! Funny we have the same realtor. I <3 Rob, he helped me buy my house in Glendale. What an odyssey buying a home is. I'm excited to see yours.

  28. I’m a native SFer who has now lived in SoCal for almost 5 years, and I LOVE it. Home for us is San Diego-but we have great weekend trips up to LA. I can’t wait to see all the cool places you’ll discover!

  29. Welcome to the neighborhood! Born and raised and never left here :). Looks like some of the pics are of Silver Lake neighborhood (one of them is down the street from my parents’ house). I am sure you will enjoy exploring all the diversity this city has to offer. Northeast LA and DTLA have been so exciting with change lately! Enjoy!

  30. Welcome to LA! (And hi from Los Feliz!)
Can’t wait to read about the area through your wonderful posts and photos!

    xx J
