morning rituals: a cup above.

This post was created in connection with my appointment as a nespresso “A Cup Above” participant. All opinions are my very own.

i’m kind of a creature of habit — well, probably more than kind of. i definitely like rituals and i tend to follow patterns that start my day off right. if i don’t stick to my routine, i tend to be a little off-kilter, always playing catch-up throughout my day. so first things first is a hike with my pup lucy up in elysian park. next up is always, always coffee. i hate to say i have to have it, but i certainly love it, and it’s a way of symbolizing for me that the day has begun.

i enjoy making it at home with all my favorite cups and coffee spoons, and love drinking it leisurely out back on the patio, or if i’ve got a friends over, creating a little breakfast spread with maybe some fresh bread from the bakery or fresh fruit, granola and yogurt. gives the ritual that kind of european vibe — when on holiday, i’ve always admired the leisurely way parisians or italains enjoy their breakfast in an unrushed way. in fact i don’t even think i’ve ever seen coffee to go there!

the folks at nespresso asked if i’d like to Experience A Cup Above and try their new VertuoLine Evoluo machine, which brews both large-cup coffee and authentic espresso at the touch of a button. Nespresso’s philosophy of bringing the extraordinary to the everyday and enjoying life experiences is along the same lines as my own credo, which is trying, when i can, to slow down and savor those moments — enjoying good food with good friends and doing it in an unrushed way that makes you feel happier about your choices. it’s really nice, for example, to have a morning hike with a friend and then have them over for coffee. and the VertuoLine Evoluo machine makes it easy even when you don’t have the luxury of say, weekend mornings, because you literally pop in the capsule and press a button — it’s like i’m like an instant barista because it makes this yummy crema on top, too.

i love the recyclability of Nespresso’s capsules (they’re made from aluminum) and hey, hey — they’ve recently introduced none other than mister george clooney as their brand ambassador. George has actually worked with Nespresso internationally for a few years, and now he’s finally bringing is love for the brand back home. now, if they’d just sent george along breakfast would take on a whole new level. a cup above, indeed.

  1. The capsules really are not recyclable, as much as they are tempting to use because they are so easy! Check this out:

( i know this won’t be published, but for all of our sakes please consider the environment and our future when you endorse products. You have a huge influence on people. Even the inventor of this product wishes he had never created it!)

    • hi Paula, i’m happy to publish your comment and concerns. i think what the article says is that Nespresso capsules are recyclable, but recycling is a shared responsibility and our participation is essential. i think the good that comes out of their work with small farmers in South Sudan is really important, too and supported by the Rainforest Alliance, and as they said, “If we only worked with perfect companies, we wouldn’t get anything done.”
