christmas morning breakfast.

i think as a kid, everyone’s favorite day to wake up has got to be christmas morning, right? those mornings certainly hold a lot of fond memories for me and my family. my dad had this really ridiculous and totally sweet ritual where after we’d opened all our presents we’d sit down for breakfast and as we were eating my dad would say, “wait! wait! i’m pretty sure i heard santa over here last night!” he’d then scurry off to some hiding space and bring out an extra special present for me, my brother and my mum. we always sort of expected he’d pull this trick each year, but still the anticipation of it, and my dad’s utter joy in doing this brought me as much happiness, if not more than the present itself. so christmas mornings were special for us, and always involved a favorite breakfast. so i thought i’d make something for you guys — a breakfast you can prepare in advance to make christmas morning easy on you.

i was sent a couple of pretty white pieces from martha stewart’s cookware collection to try out, so i thought i’d make you this a recipe for orange & cream cheese french toast, made with all fresh ingredients, but can be prepared the day before and refrigerated overnight so in the morning you simply pop it into the oven for about 30-35 minutes. in fact, i think it’s even better when this sits overnight and the bread soaks up all the moisture from the mixture. it takes very little prep time to make (about 15 minutes), and yet it tastes quite rich and delicious (lily and i know because we ate a bunch of this after we photographed it!). i used martha stewart’s baking dish because it’s pretty to serve in — so easy, straight from the oven. you can find the martha stewart collection at macy’s. here’s the recipe:

orange & cream cheese french toast

5 organic eggs
5 cups cubed french baguette (about 1 large baguette)
6 oz softened cream cheese
3/4 cup of organic whole milk
2/3 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
zest of one orange
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
powdered sugar and maple syrup for serving (optional)

-Preheat the oven to 350º.
-Whisk softened cream cheese until smooth. Add each egg one at a time, whisking after each addition. Stir in the milk, orange juice, maple syrup, and orange zest.
-Place the cubed bread in a well-greased 9×13 baking dish. Slowly pour the egg mixture over the bread.
-Bake for 30 minutes, or until knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
-If you like, sprinkle with powdered sugar and drizzle with warm maple syrup before serving.
