marfa, texas trip / sfgirlbybay

hey, y’all. i’ve left the building — i’m in marfa, texas in fact, celebrating bri’s birthday with a gaggle of gals. i can’t wait to share photos of our trip but in the meantime, should you have any recommendations of what we should see, eat and do, we’re all ears. i’m super excited as i haven’t been off on a girls trip like this in a while and i’ve never been to west texas and am not sure what to expect. but bring it on!

  1. Marfa is by no means East Texas. East Texas is covered in Pine Trees. But I highly recommend you take a ride over to Marathon and eat at the 12 Gage. A Star Party at McDonald Observatory is great, and you can see if you are brave enough to try the waters at Balmorhea State Park. And, of course, the Marfa Lights. If you take a day trip to Big Bend, both the Boquillas Canyon Trail and the Santa Elena Canyon Trail are beautiful and the Ross Maxwell Scenic drive should not be missed. Happy travels!

  2. I was in Marfa last spring and highly recommend the Chinati Foundation, and if possible, a guided tour of Donald Judd’s work compound, which is stunning. Have a great trip!

  3. Drive down to Terlingua, take a hike down Closed Canyon in Big Bend Ranch State Park (short and super neat), poke around the ghost town, and have dinner and listen to the band at the Starlite Theater.

    Enjoy West Texas!

  4. It is 28 degrees here in San Marcos (between Austin & San Antonio) so I reckon that you girls are cold out there this morning. Brrrr.

  5. If the Lunch Shark (food trailer) is around, he has some great food. Ditto on earlier recommendations on attending a star party and a scenic drive at Big Bend. We also loved Indian Lodge State Park, but thought the Marfa Lights were a total and complete bust (hoax?) & waste of time. Maybe having a bottle of wine or two along on that outing would have livened up the watch.

  6. Great shots of the Prada Sculpture I´m from Germany and I only know Marfa because of this stunning installation and the art foundation. Greetings from cologne Kathrin
