la dolce vita, at home.

if you asked me where else in the world i might like to live, the answer hands-down would be italy. i love everything about the italian culture — the friendly people, the slow life, eating amazing fresh food al fresco, drinking wine on warm nights outdoors in charming cafes. those gardens created in window boxes but that spill lushly over tiny balconies — sigh. la dolce vita, indeed. Target has a new threshold collection aptly entitled dolce vita, and i was invited to create my very own outdoor retreat with a global vibe. i was happy to jump right in and get a little creative outdoors. the weather is warming up with spring here and i intend to eat as many meals with friends and family on my patio as possible.

i started by creating my own moveable feast — an urban herb garden, growing all the ingredients for cooking a perfect al fresco meal — basil, oregano, thyme and loads of other fresh herbs, all displayed on the threshold rattan bar cart on casters. i thought it might be pretty to grow a little herb garden in their seagrass tote bag as a table centerpiece, too. and just for fun, i created a little succulent garden in their white stoneware three-part bowls. i added a few pretty blown glass lanterns and white pillar candles to create that low-lit ambiance. and for my guests’ extra cozy comfort a few throw pillows for my built-in banquette — the mi casa throw pillow and the fun global print pillow.

now to set the table — the dolce vita woven tray is simply perfecto for serving aperitifs and appetizers, and i added the mia recycled glass carafe and mia tumblers for serving wine with a dash more style. i chose threshold’s chambray napkins with charming fringe and their white terracotta dip bowls for snacks — one can’t have an outdoor dining experience without bread & olives! i think we’re ready to chill out, eat, drink and be merry — buon appetito!

  1. I remember looking for herbs at the supermarket in France and discovering that they’re sold in pots! Because otherwise they wouldn’t be FRESH! (Slap upside the head for the newbie)
Now I have them en plein terre and just go out with scissors when I need some–they stay green through winter.
Daylight savings time is when we move outside. The temperature is OK until the sun goes down, and that change in hour makes all the difference.

  2. A great arrangement done with inexpensive materials. Yeah, me too, get the chilled wine out on the patio

  3. I have been reading your beautiful blog for many years and I’m so appreciative of the inspiration it provides. I hope you will always be here! Keep up the excellent work.
