bentwood, or thonet chairs have been around the block — a few times. michael thonet created the first thonet chair with its curved, graceful shapes by forming the wood in hot steam. the first thonet, or “coffee shop chair no. 14” was made in 1859! i’ve got a few vintage beauties around my dining table and i like them mix and matched with a few saarinen swivel chairs (both sets of chairs found on craigslist). other great resources for vintage bentwood chairs are elsie green and chairish, and for brand new ones, check out dwr. if you don’t require more dining chairs in your abode, thonets look great bedside stacked with your favorite books, or are perfectly lovely as a desk chair. happy hunting!

  1. Much as I revere the Wishbone and Cherner chairs, I would like half a dozen of these classic beauties around my table. We have a lovely carver sized bentwood that belonged to my grandparents, woven seat sadly replaced as it had been badly damaged. I first knew it painted white when I was a child (my mother used to sit in it in the early 30s), then I took it and repainted it purple (I think…it was mid 70s), then pale yellow in 82 and finally my father stained it a very dark brown, as it remains today. My own children sat in it from the age of 2 upwards. Still going strong but now retired to be in the bedroom.

  2. Nice post. These pieces are getting harder to find on Craigslist. I adore Thonet chairs, as does one of my design idols, Tom Scheerer. I did a little “Where’s Waldo” search for Thonet through Tom’s portfolio on my blog a couple of months ago, if you’re interested!

  3. I love the Thonet chairs, have some in my eat-in kitchen. But I can’t figure out what counter stools coordinate! Argh!
