rust and pink velvet throw pillows on white bed. / sfgirlbybay

last week our amazing new contributor chelsea from hazel & scout did a color story on rust. now there’s a color i can’t say i thought i’d ever be that into. i think i wore some rust-colored levi cords in the 70’s, but that’s as far as that ever went. but man, pair it with pale pink and va-va-voom, rust is on fire! someone called it terracotta and i think they’re onto something, because rust, well it’s just not that great a word and it conjures up some kinda unappealing imagery, like rusted out cars and bad shag carpeting. but allow me to demonstrate the happier side of rust, errrr — terracotta. happy friday!

  1. this is such a lovely headboard idea — a vertical garland of dried flowers. and paired with some velvet throw pillows with just a touch of terracotta, pink and all that white — it’s just so fresh looking. love it!
  2. see, this instagram from @byaudreyjeanne is what i mean by the perfect pairing of a pale pink and just a hint of terracotta. such a pretty contrast of feminine and masculine colors, isn’t it?
  3. i love the look of this pretty Melbourne Pop-up Atelier featured on coco kelley. the whole pop-up is themed around this color palette!
  4. this home tour in the Netherlands featured on remodelista has hints of terracotta throughout, but i love this paler rust shade paired with just a little pink.
  5. pampa has these great new woven tote bags for spring, and available in such a great color palette! i’d like one of each, please. check out the whole bag collection for some wonderful patterns, too.
  6. i quite like this ingenious idea of painting molding-like stripes on your walls. such a good graphic look, and not an expensive one to DIY. paired with brass fixtures the look is so spot-on.
  7. dutch magazine vtwonen features a similar look, but this time creating a faux wainscoting which also looks simply smashing.
  8. and how about wearing it? i love these terracotta high-waisted trousers (especially with that coat, and those suspenders!) featured on apartment34! très chic, indeed!

  1. Beautiful. Especially the first picture, now I am on the hunt for cushions. I still love my wool coat I bought three winters ago – the color is “rust” :)

  2. A beautiful color combo and great examples. Your reminder of the rust colored Levi’s cords of the 70’s had me laughing, I remember them well! You had to have the gray, rust and brown or you were out, as far as high school fashion was concerned:).

  3. did a wedding in soft white, rust(terracotta), pale faded rose and a particular shade of winter branch brown over 10 years ago…looked like a faded floral masterpiece painting…the falling leaves of October made it perfectly imperfect. Gorgeous pictures and unique colourway…everyone seemed to love it.
