three favorite ceramicists.

Like many folks, I’ve fallen in love with handmade ceramics in the past few years. After drinking my tea (or wine) from a beautifully wonky and dimpled mug made by a local potter, it’s hard for me to go back to my immaculately straight and shiny mugs that were mass produced. Few things are quite as comforting as sipping a hot drink from that hand-spun piece of clay. I think that the ancient craft’s more recent revival is due to the major resurgence of natural materials and bohemian aesthetics in fashion and interiors. But, of course, contemporary ceramics encompass a wide range of styles, beyond the speckled, organic, and “earthy” look. Today, I wanted to share three of my favorite ceramicists who all have different aesthetics. I love how Ursula Basinger is creating interesting shapes with her candlesticks while retaining her desert roots and color palette. Rachel Saunders has this modern organic meets late 80s/early 90s cool-girl vibe going on that I’m digging. And Nicolette Johnson has a sculptural, fantasy-like approach to nature that, for some reason, reminds me a little of Pan’s Labyrinth–very impressive! And if you have any other ceramicists you think we should know about, please feel free to share in the comments!

cheers, ezz.

  1. I think you might also like Peta Berghofer, another Australian ceramicist (like Nic Johnson). Love this round-up!
