no built-in fireplace? no problem! at least not with these freestanding mid-century modern fireplaces. i’ve often thought about installing one of these charming fireplaces in my living room. it’s one of the things i miss most about some of my previous homes. i know it’s warm most of the time in los angeles, but it’s been a mite chilly recently (raining yet again this weekend) and so my imagination gets me wandering back to the idea of adding one of these wonderful Wood Burning Fireplaces to my home. so cozy, right?

I think that Sarah Sherman Samuel had one in her back yard in her old LA house! That would work easily for you!
Just FYI; no need to publish:
“Mite” chilly, not “might” chilly… :)

Aha!! Thank you, Charlotte!
We had one in our condo when we moved in. (It is now in the back yard.) Ours was like the first photo. Heat just went up the chimney. And I think the room was actually colder. Also we almost had a house fire, which is why it is in our backyard. Word to the wise. When you move somewhere new get the chimney cleaned before you use it and with regularity after.
I don’t believe you can install woodturning fire places or stoves. If a current house has one you can keep it but a city will not approve new ones.
Drat! City Permits are the worst! ;)
Freestanding fireplaces (gas and wood varieties) are everywhere in the Pacific Northwest but hardly any are this stylish– pinning a bunch of these for future reference!
having trouble finding one of these that is available in the US. Been on the hunt for months. Any suggestions?!
I would search ‘Freestanding Fireplaces’ and see what comes up. There’s a few I’ve found:
