life at the kitchen counter.

i’m slowly getting my laguna cottage together after moving in last week, and one of the areas i managed to get semi-pulled-together was the kitchen, and more specifically, the kitchen counter. i haven’t had a real kitchen counter in forever, but partnering with serena & lily, and their super cute barstool collection, their fresh take on casual dining is the perfect look for my new life at the beach. i chose two of their Riviera Backless Counter Stools in natural and they look so great with my 1920’s funky retro kitchen counter tile.

this morning lucy and i went for an early dog walk on the beach and then stopped at the farmer’s market to stock up the very bare fridge. followed by a light breakfast and coffee afterward at the cute kitchen counter with our bamboo stools was a perfect way to start our first weekend in laguna. i got out my favorite bowls and vintage coffee set, paired them with serena & lily’s Brela Napkins (block printed and inspired by a vintage textile library in India) and it all looked so fun together — almost too pretty to eat (but the coconut cream yogurt with blueberries and granola was too good not to). i think i need to make this a new weekend ritual.

growing up, we always ate at the kitchen counter, watching my mum cook and i love the casual feel of pulling up a stool to eat, or inviting friends into the kitchen for a glass of wine while i cook. serena & lily has a lot of beautiful barstools to choose from, and here are just a few of my favorites. bon appétit with a barstool!

  1. While you have made it look really pretty, I do wonder whether it in the long run is really an attractive proposition to sit at such a narrow -albeit pretty- counter, looking at a wall.

    • I get what you’re saying, but the counter is ‘there’ and I am renting, so my aim to make it as charming as possible and while it’s a blank wall at the moment, i literally just moved in this week, so there will either shelving or artwork there soon. And I’m mostly referring to a quick. casual meal, or coffee or friends joining me in the kitchen while I cook – not a sit-down dinner. Cheers!

  2. I think it looks very well put together with out looking “done”.
Since opinions were not requested, none were needed. Most blogs are an expression of the author, if you dont care for it, just keep going and let the rest of us enjoy:)

  3. Love this! I have a postage stamp sized kitchen and have been debating about putting a narrow higher cart on wheels with stools for breakfast and additional prep space. This idea gets me thinking again! Thanks.

  4. I *love* the tile on your counter. So very Art Deco, and they just don’t make them like that anymore – quality-wise and style-wise. Thank you for sharing. You are a lucky puppy.
