have you ever wanted to really scale down, get experimental and live a much smaller life? not in terms of heart, but in terms of belongings. that’s what creative couple Bela and spencer have done, scaled-down significantly and created this x life, a tiny home after living in the Bay area for a year. the couple’s lease was up and they realized they’d spent over $30k on rent and felt as though they had just flushed that money down the drain and thought, there must be something better to do with that money! At the same time, they were thinking about expanding their family, looking into the san francisco housing market, which left them feeling like they’d never be able to afford the sort of home they really wanted. After researching other solutions they came across tiny homes and it inspired them to design their own tiny handcrafted home with a builder and with their family’s unique lifestyle in mind.

the result is their very charming tiny home, named after their daughter, Escher. the home was designed specifically to be a luxurious home without any compromises. To that end, the home includes a full-sized kitchen equipped with a professional range and dishwasher, a room of her own for daughter escher and a room of the couple’s own (with a king-sized bed!) as well -— all the luxuries of a modern home. so much of living in their tiny home has been about expanding to the outdoors and living outside the home, which is situated on top of a mountain top in boulder creek, california (near santa cruz) with gorgeous views of the mountains and a hiking ridge within walking distance.

they’ve also expanded the home to include a huge deck (which basically doubles the size of the home!), a cute canvas tent, and are currently in the process of installing an outdoor soak tub. the family has been living in it for over two years and are now renting it out on airbnb while they travel, which allows them to subsidize their journeys — so smart! their goal is to set up more homes across the u.s. in the next few years —- they love to migrate often and love to create and share beautiful, minimalist-inspired spaces with others. they’ve also been so inspired by the folks they’ve met through the tiny house movement that they are planning to launch a lifestyle journal in 2020 — Experimental Life — all about living outside the box. they’ve also got tons of tips on tiny living on their blog. be sure to check out this x life and follow their adventures on instagram.
