wood and ribbed glass cabinet in modern kitchen with pale pink backsplash. / sfgirlbybay

i’ve always been a sucker for glass cabinets, but i have a brand new crush and that’s frosted, fluted and ribbed glass! sorry, plain old glass — you’re just not quite unique enough for me these days. i’m instead really struck by the beautiful illusion that these more discrete kinds of glass offer up. i’ve been a fan of Samuel zeller’s book Botanical: Tales from the City and all of a sudden i started seeing a trend that’s quite similar to his ‘greenhouse effect’ — the good kind — steamy, frosted glass that simply lets you imagine what lies behind it. and i really love the ribbed or fluted glass too as an alternative to using traditional glass — whether it’s inserted into kitchen cabinets making what lurks behind look simply amazing, or added to louvered windows and glass room dividers allowing more privacy (a perfect solutions for bathrooms, too!), i just love this rather retro look. and, i’m also seeing it make an appearance in all kinds of home decor accessories  — like glassware, bathroom accouterment, and vases, too. bravo for the mystery behind this beautiful illusionary glass.
