in memory of lucy / sfgirlbybay

some of you may have seen my instagram this week, but if not, i’m sorry to share with you that i lost lucy, my companion of ten lovely, but too short years, and my only daily companion since this same time last year. she never whined about that, she never complained, she just hung out with me in this pandemic quarantine, offering endless comfort, unconditional love, friendship, and quite naturally, a relentless request for treats. i’m so glad i always indulged lucy, aka lucy goosey or goose, or a favorite of mine: madame von soft paws (a loving nickname one of her favorite dog walkers suzie dubbed her). in return, it feels like she gave me a lifetime’s worth of love. my cottage is so quiet now. no morning muppet attack to get me out of bed. no tipppy tap tippy tap of her nails come hithering to beg me for one more treat before bedtime. just the sound of my own whimpering at a loss felt way too early. i thought we’d have many more years together. our animals just never live as long as we’d like them to. someone once told me that dogs arrive here already so wise they just don’t live as long as we do because they already know everything we need to learn. i think that might be true.

in the words i’ve always loved, penned by w.h. auden:

She was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

thank you for all the love and well wishes you sent her way after i posted last week. we both felt them deeply and i’ve read them all. i’m sorry if i haven’t replied but it’s a little hard at the moment but every one of them has brought me comfort. i know so many of you can relate to loss of our dear little beasts. i’m having a hard time getting a grip right at this moment, so i’ll be taking a short break and be back soon.

  1. Devastated. Every Single Time a friend has to leave. I feel it, because I know it. So sorry Victoria, May Lucy guide your way forward and bring you a new friend should you want one. Shattering, but the love never leaves us.

  2. i commented on instagram but again, i’m so so sorry, victoria. I lost two of my boys a few years ago to cancer, a few months apart- one of them was named cooper :) – and was just gutted. so feel for you now. sending you love and light. take good care of yourself. ❤️

  3. I am so sorry to hear the loss of your beautiful Lucy…
My little love Tao is 14yrs old & i have been looking after him since his accident last January & have had to teach him all the basics again, I can’t even imagine what it would be like without him in my life.
Sending you Love & Best Wishes for this terribly sad time. x

  4. I’m so sorry for your loss. It is heartbreaking to lose a pet. Our dog comes and cuddles me daily and she is so loving and kind, it breaks my heart to think that some day she will no longer do so. But it is infinitely rewarding when you realise that the love works both ways. A loving dog is that way because it is loved. When we got our dog she was a skinny barking bundle of anxiety, now she is a couragous tiny loving powerhouse.
Don’t feel bad if you get another pet, that pet will never replace the one you lost, these things can co-exist. ❤️

  5. The loss of a furry friend is so hard. Sending you wishes of comfort and peace. Lucy lived her best life with your care.

  6. I am so saddened by your loss. What a lovely girl your Lucy was. Her light has made this world a better place.

  7. I’m so very sorry to hear this. She was a beauty and obviously a kind soul. There’s a book called Soul Dog by Elena Mannes that I recently bought as I’m still grieving the loss of my beautiful St Bernard. You may find it helpful. God bless and my condolences.

  13. A dog’s love is so great and so perfect that the loss is so so huge! I’m so sorry for your pain. I remember emptiness of the house after the loss of my dog was the hardest thing. When/if you are ready, another dog does not replace but simply helps the healing process so much and of course helps another dog. Lucy was as lucky to have you as you were to have her. Take all the time and space you need. Thinking of you.

  14. I love what one of your commenters just said: “A loving dog is that way because she was loved.” From reading your blog and following on Instagram, I can see that was certainly true of Lucy. Glad you’re taking some time for yourself. Sending peace. Xo

  18. Victoria – so immensely sad to read this and see photos of the adorable Lucy. She was a looker with that white coat and those beautiful eyes. The only problem with pets is they simply do not live long enough. My heart goes out to you. Each day will get a tiny bit better and somewhere down the road, you will be ready to bring another loving creature into your life. Sending love and best wishes.

I hope that soon her memories will bring you smiles instead of tears. But for now go ahead, and cry your eyes out…..she was your bestie and she was a part of your life that can never be replaced. She was beautiful.

  31. I wish words could comfort you and heal the emptiness from Lucy’s loss…it’s hard but I’m sure that despite the pain if you could go back you would not regret a minute with her. No other dog can be a replacement, it will just be another love to live.
