i’m not sure if when we can begin traveling again if many of you might have ukraine on your list of must-visits, but if so, kiev, one of the oldest cities of Europe and the soul and capital of ukraine is probably high on your agenda. and sushi? well who knows, but there’s a charming, and very industrial-chic spot called the FISH & PUSSYCAT that’s getting rave reviews. this hot spot may be a bit incognito, so just follow the sign that says ‘Follow your Fishes’ — what’s a trip to the former Soviet bloc without a little mystery? we’re going to dress the part — in almost fifty shades of low-key grey. to start, a killer wrap dress worn with a spy-like belted coat with matching cashmere beanie and scarf and naturally some knee-high tall black boots. don’t forget to pack your reading glasses because on the rather long plane ride over you’re going to want to dive into Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart, an unforgettable story of young Hugh ‘Shuggie’ Bain, a sweet and lonely boy who spends his 1980s childhood in run-down public housing in Glasgow with a glamourous but alcoholic mum. the subject matter may seem a tad dark, but shuggie’s heart will warm you. i couldn’t put it down.

  1. Please do not refer to Ukraine as “the Ukraine.” The USSR promoted this terminology in order to reduce the country to simply a region under their control, and they would love to control Ukraine again. The Russian government has a terrible history of Ukrainian genocide; for more information search “Holodomor.”

    Thank you!

  2. My future daughter in law gave me your book. She’s a big fan of yours. We are coming to Laguna in July and staying at Hotel Joaquin. I see your recommendation for fish & pussycat. Can you make a few more>? I read that you live in Laguna now so I’m guessing you know the place. Lunch and dinner recommendations would be super helpful. We hare your taste. Thanks!!

    • Thank you so much! The chef at Hotel Joaquin is actually excellent, so be sure and eat there. I also love Harley’s, La Sirena Grill, Urth Cafe, Lumberyard, Nick’s, 230 Forest, Slapfish, Carmelita’s (great margaritas and Mexican food), Starfish, Coyote Grill, and Las Brisas is a nice view for cocktails with pretty good food (but not great – okay for appetizers). The Fish & Pussycat is not here in Laguna, though – just FYI. Have fun!
